But they continue to demand food. “Gradually greater burdens are laid upon the fruit and vegetable hunters. These insist upon a larger share of fish in return for their larger effort in gathering fruit and vegetables. It is denied them, and soon twenty of the twenty-jfive .quit gathering fruit and vegetables. “But the entire one hundi-ed men con tinue to insist upon their right to eat. “The daily food supply gradually shrinks. The man with two fish demands three bananas in exchange for one of them. The man with two bananas refuses to part with one for fewer than three fish. “Finally, the ten men remaining at work quit in disgust. Everybody con tinues to eat. The hidden fish are brought to light and consumed. Comes a day when there is no food of any kind. Everybody on the island blames somebody else. “What would seem to be the solution? “Exactly! We thought you would guess it. “For we repeat that you can’t eat, buy, sell, steal, give away, hoard, wear, use, play with, or gamble with WHAT ISN’T.” Badin in Her New Armor Suppose you were to hear some morn ing, in answer to a ’phone call which was in the nature of a command, something like this. “You go down and paint the town of Badin.” Lesser things have caused men to wear straightjackets, and peep thru bars the remainder of their lives. In addition to the preserving quality • of paint, the Company demanded that the sameness of color which at that time characterized all of the apartment bouses be entirely eliminated. Mr. H. C. Long, of New York, was the gentleman who was elected to do the job, and no doubt he spent many sleepless nights after his arrival here.
