Thanksgiving, 1919
God has been merciful this year—
Earth has not spared her store,
And folded all away again
Are tents and traps of war.
Yet clamoring in every town
That holds a garnered harvest brown,
The thankless ones go up and down,
Who ask for more and more.
Disciples of the new red god.
The god of discontent.
Dark mills and silent factories
Show clear the way they went.
They follow him, and have forgot
The God of plenteousness who wrought
Their being—they remember not
The freeman’s covenant!
They seek for plenty without toil,
They ask of earth her yield.
While yet their engines idle lie
In mill and mine and field.
They cry with many a crimson word
They ask, but not of God the Lord;
They have forgot his sudden sword
With wrath and justice steeled.
Now is a day ordained for praise
When eyes on him may wait.
Now is a time to offer thanks.
Humble and intimate.
May God lift up men’s hearts again,
iVith gratitude for sun and rain.
With thankfulness to cleanse the stain.
Before it is too late!
