BADIN BULLETIN Pag* Fit* ICOiVLEi HnoLty. EVEN THE FISHES HAVE THEIR TIME TO LAUGH! Yard Contest and Prizes Every normal man and woman has to a greater or less degree some idea of symmetry, of proportion—the sense of the beautiful. What this sense has done and will do for the peace, contentment and happiness of mankind, it is impossi ble to say. But it is true that this thing alone is one of the largest governing features of our daily lives. Any man, even though uneducated in architecture judges a building by its symmetry of outline, judges whether it is pleasing to the eye or ugly and distasteful. And in the same way we judge a home by the pleasing or unpleasing effect of its surroundings—its yard and flower gar den. Nothing adds more to the “homey” appearance of a house than the presence .of a lawn, and of flowers in the fore- [ Vound. In Badin the planting and care of a lawn is not an easy matter, and it re quires willingness on the part of the resident to expend some time and energy, but the results obtained will far overbalance the work required to pro duce them. In order to make Badin as pretty a place as possible this summer, the Tal- lassee Power Company is not only fur nishing its people with lawn and flower seeds gratis, but has further agreed to repeat last year’s offer of prizes to be given to the cultivators of the three pret tiest yards in Badin—first prize, ten dol lars; second prize, eight dollars; third prize, five dollars. The yards will be judged at regularly f tated intervals of time throughout the ^6mmer by a capable committee of Badin residents, and the prizes awarded at the end of the season. It is necessary, how ever, for each person who desires to be a contestant to register as such, and upon registration will be presented with a card showing that he is a bona fide contestant. The contest starts May 15 and ends September 30. Now is the time to reg ister at Tallassee Power Company Gen eral Office over the barber shop in the Commercial Block. Let us all, if we wish to be known by our deeds, not only beautify the sur roundings of our homes, but at the same time be true to our sporting instinct, enter this contest now, and play the game to the finish. —Landscape Department The Taylor stokers which have just been installed are quite an improvement. The Vegetable Garden Garden operations should be rushed on and all the more tender plants gotten in. Continue planting succession crops, such as beans and corn at least twice a month. I think it best to plant two or three rows of corn at a planting so there will be an abundance of pollen, for a single row of corn seldom does well. Plant squash, cucumbers, cante- loupes and watermelon, if not planted in April. Set out egg plant three feet apart and three feet in the rows. Egg plant should be sprayed to keep off the potato beetle. They attack these as much as they do the potato. Lettuce that you vnsh to head before the weather gets too hot must be pushed along and never allowed to suffer from lack of water. Watch every chance to put in something else as the eai’lier crops ma ture. Don’t allow your land to stand vacant. You should use every effort to keep the garden at work, not only all summer but all the year 'round. If not already done, the sweet potato crop should be planted.
