Quinlan Vol. Ill OCTOBER, 1920 No. 1 Rewarded for Service In this issue are two articles bearing on the phrase, “Rewarded for Service.” One is an outline of the career of Mr, Davis, the president of our parent com pany, The Aluminum Company of America; the other concerns two well- known employees of the Badin Works. The first touches on the lifework of one of our country’s big men; the second tells of a big incident in the lives of two of our fellow-workers. Both narratives are similar, in that they emphasize the one fact, namely: good service is cer tain to be rewarded. Loyalty, faithful ness, dependability, and efficiency were recognized in the work of a man who has become president of a corporation which has placed the United States in the foreground in the world’s production of aluminum. Those same characteris tics were so prominent in the make-up of “Dick” Strathen and York that, when two men were to be chosen from the Badin baseball team as worthy recipients of a free trip to the world series, they were the unaimous choice. And jso it is ,that service, real service, is rewarded. We all appreciate the above-mentioned characteristics when we discover them in other persons; sometimes we rather underrate their importance. But we frequently hear or read of instances in which the fortunate possessor of these qualities is given a just recognition, and it is then that we are reminded of the true worth of such characteristics. There upon we resolve to acquire them for our selves. In the carrying out of our reso lution, we often fail to realize that it is no easy task, and so we become disap pointed because it appears that we are not making any impression on persons around us. It is an axiom that good things come slowly, therefore we should not be easily discouraged. We can vouch for the fact that “Dick” and York were surprised to learn that they had'at tracted undue attention, and undoubtedly President Davis was likewise unaware that his characteristics had become so noticeable; hence we too should keep plug ging at our development process. Badin to Enjoy Lyceum The Fall and Winter will bring four first-class entertainments to the Badin Theater, and these four performances will give much pleasure and enjoyment to those who enjoy the better type of amusement. Badin is fortunate to se cure such entertainers as compose the various attractions of the Piedmont Ly ceum Bureau, and the four numbers which go to make the program for this season are particularly well chosen for this community. On November 12, 1920, the Nevin Mu sical Club will make its first appearance in Badin, and will also acquaint the peo ple in this section with the really good talent furnished by a bureau as well known as the Piedmont Lyceum Bureau. Attendance at this first performance will be certain to ensure your attendance at the other three. The Nevin Company will render the choicest and most popu lar selections of the day, playing violin, ’cello, flute, and piano. The Ward Ladies’ Quartet is a com pany composed of ladies who sing. In addition to their singing, each one is an artist on some orchestral instrument, and one is a reader, thereby adding variety and novelty to their program. The Clifford Foote Trio and the Po- luhni Company are the other attractions. More details concerning these two will be given. Plans are now being perfected to ad vertise the fact that Badin will be visited by the Lyceum companies, and it is hoped that everyone will help to make this appearance so successful that the program for next year may be enlarge^^ to include several more numbers. Season tickets will be placed on sale early this week in the Badin Phar macy and the club house. Some of upper-classmen in the high school wiH canvass the town in a serious effort to induce every Badinite to become a season ticket holder. The prices will be most reasonable; season tickets for adult® will cost but two dollars, and the ticket will entitle the holder to a reserved seat for the four entertainments. Season tickets for children will sell at one dolla^’ and will also entitle the holder to a r®' served seat for the four entertainmei^tS' Single admission will be seventy cents for adults, and thirty-'five cents children. , Because this program has been secure^ for the prime purpose of furnishing amusement for as many as possibl®’ family season tickets will sell for thr®® dollars, and this ticket will admit hu® band and wife and their children are under fourteen years of age. In order to assure proper appreciation of the performances, /and to prevent d'sturbance of the entertainers, the coi^^ mittee in charge has decided not to a mit children in arms to any perforniano®’ and no child under eight years of to any except the entertainment nished by the Poluhni Company. ^ will not result in any hardships to a ^ one, and it will add greatly to the sati® faction of the audience.
