Del Monte Selected
ForFifthNavy
Pre-Flight School
A fifth Pre-Flight School will be
commissioned early next year at Del
Monte, Cal., to ease the pressure of
the expanding naval aviation program
on the other four units located at
Athens, Ga., Iowa City, la., St. Mary’s,
Cal., and here at Chapel Hill, N. C.
In reporting selection of the new
school, Capt. A. W. Radford, director
of the Navy’s aviation training pro
gram, stated:
“The difficulty of training men fast
enough to meet the demand at primary
bases has been bothering us for some
time. I believe that the Del Monte Pre-
Flight School will speed up the pro
gram at a very critical time and will
help to prevent the bottlenecks that
interfere with the attainment of our
goal of 30,000 pilots yearly.”
A Bureau of Aeronautics statement
announcing that the property and
grounds of the Del Monte Hotel on
Monterey Peninsula had been taken
over by the Navy Department indi
cated that existing facilities, with a
few additions and changes, would be
adequate for the needs of the 1,500 to
2,000 Pre-Flight cadets to be stationed
there. Nearby the huge and towering
central building are spacious grounds,
the world-fpmous Del Monte and Peb
ble Beach Golf Courses, one of the
world’s largest salt water pools, and
carefully planned gardens. Less than
three miles away is the ocean front.
Under present plans, Del Monte will
receive its first battalion of cadets on
or about next Feb. 1.
Officers assigned to the new school
will be drawn principally from officer
personnel of the other four Pre-Flight
Schools, supplemented by new V-5 in
structors undergoing or scheduled to
undergo their naval indoctrination here
at Chapel Hill.

Already 12 officers now at Chapel
Hill have been selected for transfer to
the new Del Monte school, and others

Christmas Brings First Holiday Here
CLOUDBUSTER Will
Not Appear Dec. 26
In keeping with the Christmas holi
days observed next week by employees
of the Orange Printshop which pub
lishes this paper, the Cloudbuster will
not be issued next Saturday, Dec. 26.
However, publication. will be re
sumed during the following week. It
is planned to distribute the next issue
on Friday, Jan. 1—instead of on Sat
urday.
To all our readers go sincerest wish
es for an enjoyable Christmas in these

The Germans would rather not
dream of a white Christmas, especially
on the Russian front.
