Admiral Buckmaster and Staff Visit Here
Cadets Invited to Opera
A special free performance of
Gilbert and Sullivan comic
opera, “lolanthe,” will be given

Carolina Playmakers in Memorial

Rear Admiral Elliott P. Buckmaster, USN, Chief of Naval Air
Primary Training with headquarters at Kansas City, Kan., flew to
Chapel Hill with his staff last weekend to visit the Pre-Flight School.
The flying Admiral came aboard Saturday and departed Sunday
morning after inspecting cadet quarters with Comdr. John P. Graff,
USN (Ret.), commanding officer<S>— —
of this station.
Admiral Buckmaster was com
manding officer of the aircraft car
rier, Yorktown, until it sank after
the Battle of Midway last year. In
his present position, he has charge
of the training at the Pre-Flight
Schools and at the various Naval
Air Stations used for primary
flight instruction.

The visit here of Admiral Buck
master and staff climaxed an
eventful week at this Pre-Flight
School. Early in the week, on Jan.
18, Col. Roane Waring, National
Commander of the American Le
gion, (pictured on the right), vis
ited this naval activity and ad
dressed the regiment of cadets
from the stage of Memorial Hall.
On Friday, Jan. 22, Comdr.
Merle A. Sawyer, USN (pictured
on the left), visited the station
after formally presenting the
Army-Navy “E” Award to the Na
tional Munitions Corporation of
Carrboro. The Pre-Flight Navy
Band provided music for the cere
monies which were attended by
many of the officers and by the
entire 14th Battalion of the Regi
ment.
Pre-Flighters Dance at Ball Tonight
Cadets, officers, crew and civilian
employees of the Pre-Flight School
are expected to join in goodly num
bers with university faculty, stu
dents and townspeople tonight to
make the President’s Birthday
Ball, which climaxes the annual in
fantile paralysis fund-raising
campaign, a signal success. Start
ing time for the ball is 2100, and
the place, Woollen gymnasium.
Music will be provided by the
Pre-Flight orchestra, and special
entertainment—including several
glee club numbers and a tumbling
exhibition by Ens. Porter K. John
