j Saturday, March 13, 1943 CLOUDBUSTER Page Three Vindicator Squadron Wins Winter Sports Program THERE ARE TOO MANY in the top photo to print their names in the cutlines, but from the smiles on their faces they’re evidently happy. They should be, too, for they’re members of the Vindicator Squadron, winners of, the winter sports program just completed. During the season they scored 62 points while the Coronado squadron, who ended up second, scored 59%. Squadron Athletic Director of the Vindicators was Lieut. Tom W. O’Connor who gives credit for the squadron’s success to the spirit of the cadets and the coaches in charge of the various sports. Lower photo, left to right, shows the coaches. Front row; Ens. George Raab, wrestling; Ens. Sam Ham- merstrom, football; Lieut. Tom W. O’Connor, director; Lieut. F. Hag gerty, basketball. Second row: Lieut. Harry Lawrence, boxing; Junior Platoon Officer, Cadet Robert McLeary, swimming; Lieut, (jg) J. E. Wadsworth, soccer, and Lieut, (jg) Harry H. Hedgepath, foot ball. In charge of the sports program is Lieut. Charles C. Bream, Jr. ’Buster Nine Starts Practice; Kepler Satisfied With Outlook ^from the new battalion which came aboard Thursday. : Sport Slants.. Now that the national pastime : is the major varsity sport at the Pre-Flight School we’d like to liven things up a bit with some diamond humor. Cadets, officers, enlisted men and : otherwise can help. Just take off ; ^ few minutes and jot down the ; ©ddest or funniest baseball story you ever heard. Bring it by the ! Cloudbuster office and we’ll do I the rest. Just to start things off we’ll tell I the one about the rookie who was V trying to make the grade on a I class D club. His only trouble was ; that he liked to sleep, and, strange- ! ly enough, he was so good at this ; pet aversion that it made no dif- ! ference where. ■j On one occasion he fell asleep I m the dugout only to have his ! ^lanager awaken him and imme- j diately ask what he was thinking j about. “Oh,” the rookie said, still I l^alf asleep, “I was just wonder- j if there was one man on first, : two on second, three on third, and I ^he batter would strike out just I ^ow many would score?” I This next one is told at the start of every season. It seems that a ^61’tain major leaguer at bat took two terrific swings at the ball only miss both times. The third pitch came across, the batter didn’t swing, but the umpire yell- I ^d, “Strike three, you’re out.” “That was a mile over my head,” sai'castically retorted the batter. You certainly missed that one.” “Well, don’t let it worry you,” ump replied. “I’m still one up. You missed the first two.” Battleships Still Undefeated; Meet Carriers Tuesday I I^efeating the Destroyers 36 to 3 last Tuesday night in the Tin Lieut. Bo Shepard’s Battle- ^ ips remain the only undefeated in the officers’ basketball ^®ague. ^^ay ends this Tuesday night— ^^atured game being between ; ® undefeated Battleships and Lt. omdr. Harvey Harman’s Car- iiers. Whether Lieut. Shepard ^^d Lt. Comdr. Harman will par- ^^ipate in the game was unknown Pi’ess time. Coach Shepard has ^^ounced that he will play if ai'ttian does. Other results of the past week the Cruisers defeat the Car- 34 to 27, and the Submarines ®^6at the Minesweepers, 37 to 28. “It’s still too early to tell where we’ll be strong or where we’ll be weak,” Lieut. Don Kepler, head baseball coach, commented after the Cloudbusters finished their third workout of the season yes terday afternoon. “But,” he continued, “I’m con fident that we’ll have a good ball club on the field when we play our opening game against Catawba College at Salisbury on April 3.” Over 30 cadets participated in workouts this past week, and others are expected to tryout dur ing the next few days. Several will probably report on Monday Coach Kepler and assistants Lieut, (jg) Buddy Hassett, Lieut, (jg) Pete Appleton, Lieut, (jg) A1 Sabo, and Ensign Bob Williams spent most of their time watching the cadets do a variety of things. Appleton and Williams took a good look at the pitchers, Hassett had his eye on the infielders and hit ters, and Sabo kept the catchers in line. All over the field was Coach Kepler who tried to watch everything while seeing that everyone was given a fair chance. See BASEBALL, page U 1200 Cadets Will Participate In Track Events Postponed from last week, the track carnival, which is expected to have 1200 cadet participants, will be held next week, it has been announced by Lieut.
