(jg) Leonard Eiserer, USNR Associate Editor: Orville Campbell, Yiic By Lieut. Eric H, Arendt Chaplain Corps, USN On Memorial Day we pay homage to those Americans who lost their lives in the service of their Country. These were loyal citizens, committed to the principles which seemed just and right. They were willing, even in the face of death, to express unfaltering fidelity and love for their Country. For the seventh time in our relatively brief history, men are again making the supreme sacrifice. We in America separate the functions of Church and State. We do not, however, sep arate the significance of religion from the total life of the Nation. Thus, as we muster all our resources for the present engagement against oppression, and we set out to free the World from bondage and establish a World more compatible to the principles of right, of justice, of freedom, we think of Memorial Day with greater significance than ordinarily. We are summoned to remember! If we could only learn from the experiences of the past, perhaps there would not need to be re currences such as our present war. But, re gardless of the past, we have undertaken a mission of the present—a mission in which we will not fail. We have faith, as persons who stand in a noble and religious tradition, that in God’s World, righteousness will triumph. We are on the side of righteousness! It is faith in God that has kept us a Nation. It is faith in God that gives us the unconquer able spirit to win. It will be faith in God that will, if we but allow it, have future genera tions say about us “they fought and died for what they believed to be right and they have not died in vain.” Buster Bits— From “Life With Father” to life with Uncle Sam was the big step taken by Cadet Richard A.
