Saturday, June 5, 1943 CLOUDBUSTER Page Three The Champs Show Jimmie *. • - “YOU HOLD THE BAT like this,” Cadet Theodore Williams tells Jimmie Raugh, Cloudbuster batboy, as Cadet John Pesky looks on. Prom the expression on Jimmie’s face he’s determined to hit the next pitch out of the park. At least he had the two best teachers in the business for Cadets Williams and Pesky played last year with the Boston Red Sox where they hit .356 and .331 respectively. 1,216 Non-Swimming Cadets Learn How to Swim Here Vindicators IVin Sports Program Final standings in the Spring Sports Program show the Vindi cators a one point champion over the Wildcats in a tight squadron competition race, 88-87. Track, wrestling, and boxing provided the margin of winning for the new champs. In track the Vindicators had eight wins as against two losses, in wrestling ten wins for two losses, and in box ing five wins, four losses. In the same sports, the Wildcats have a count of 9-3, 4-4, 4-4. In gym both contestants tied, winning six and losing one each. Swimming gives a clear margin to the Wildcats who won six and lost none in comparison with two victories and four defeats for the Vindicators. Soccer proved un kind to both squads, the new lead ers winning three and losing eight to the runner-ups six victories and seven losses. Bunched ' closely together be hind, the Kingfishers took third with 78 points, the Devastators fourth with 73 and the Buccaneers fifth with 72. $116,736.00. A lot of money? That’s just about the approxi mate amount that the swimming department of the Chapel Hill Navy Pre-Flight School has given away in free lessons to non swimmer cadets in little over a year. At least, Lieut. John Miller, USNR, head pre-flight coach and former Mercersburg academy mentor, figures it that way. “Since the start of the naval aviation physical fitness program here May 23, 1942, well over 1,216 cadets who couldn’t swim a lick on entering now have been taught to be at home in the water. “In civilian life swimming in struction for beginners runs $2.00 a lesson. At that rate, taking the number 1,216—multiplying it by instruction given at $2 per head, the Navy here alone has provided over a hundred-thousand dollars worth of water education to non swimmers. “Actually, of course, the mone tary angle is just a sidelight. The important thing is that 1,216 fu ture naval fliers have been taught to swim, starting from scratch. Someday this knowledge may save their lives. See NON-SWIMMERS, page U Cloudbusters Split Games With Naval Air Station Cadet Joseph Coleman let the Naval Air Station down with seven hits here Sunday afternoon and the Cloudbusters scored a 3 to 1 vic tory over their Norfolk mates before 4000 fans. The win was more than welcomed by the Pre-Flight nine for on Saturday night the Cloudbusters dropped a 5 to 4 decision to the same club at Greensboro. The Greensboro fray saw both teams play heads up ball all the way, and the 6,500 fans present got^^ more than their money’s worth. As was to be expected the big gest attraction on the field was Cadet Theodore “Ted” Williams. From the moment he arrived at the park until he left more time was probably spent signing auto graphs than playing baseball. Furthermore, the former Ameri can League batting champion didn’t let his public down. Going into the last half of the ninth the Pre-Flighters were three runs behind. Cadet John Pesky, who led off, was hit by pitcher Lockbaum. Then Eddie Shokes, Naval Air Station first baseman and fielding star of the evening, made a beautiful stop, of Lt. Has- sett’s hard grounder for the first out. Next up was Cadet Williams. He swung at the first pitch, a fast ball, missing it completely. Fol lowed a curve and Williams sent it over the right field scoreboard for a homer and two runs. That was the last of the scoring although Cadet Louis Gremp, next up, hit a double to right field. Starting on the m.ound for the Cloudbusters was Cadet John Sain who gave way to Lt. (jg) Robert Williams, USNR, in the ninth. Sain gave up eight hits in eight innings, walked four, and received credit for the loss. Lt. (jg) Hassett, with two singles, was the only Pre-Flighter to collect more than one hit. Shokes, with a triple and single, led the winners.
