Saturday, June 19, 1943 All-Cadet War Boiid Drive Gets Underway It IVas Their Idea Cadets Owen and Yeannopoulos Planned Variety Smoker Something new in the way of station Smokers was the one held last night, in that it was planned and arranged by cadets in cooperation with the Welfare and Recreation Office. Cadet leaders in staging the variety show were Paul Owen (pic tured on the left above), former featured soloist with Fred Waring s band, and Charles Yeannopoulos (on the right), who served as master of ceremonies on the program.^ Both are members of the senior 23rd Battalion. Music in many moods high lighted the affair, including num bers by the glee club, hot swing by the Pre-Flight band, harmoniz ing by the Foard, Cook & Cowan trio, violin selections by Arthur Senderoff, vocalizing by Paul Owen and Herach Der Hovsepian, cind fast key work on the piano by Bronson Tufts and J. B. Rhodes. Fancy baton twirling by Joseph Berube, a recitation by Williani Bragaw, tap dancing by Frank Kopf, and a jitterbug session by “Jo and Charlie” gave popular Variety to the show. Four Enlisted Men Selected for V-12 Goods news was received by four enlisted men at this station this week when it was announced that they had been selected to en ter the highly publicized V-12 Program. The fortunate ones are E. C. Read, Y2c, R. E. McReynolds, Sk2c, G. C. Shirley, Sk2c, and Theodore Ladutka, SmBc. All but McReynolds, who will report to the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., will be stationed See ENLISTED MEN, page h War Bond Tennis Tournament To be Held Here Those Who Will Fly the Planes Have Chance to Purchase Them The boys who are going to fly the planes will have an oppotrunity to help purchase them in the first All-Cadet Bond Drive which gets underway at this station on next Tuesday. War Bond posters were placed throughout the station during the past week, and cadets will file application to purchase bonds when they meet their Communication classes in Manning Hall on Tuesday. This drive marks the third that*®’ “ has been made at this station in recent months. On Pearl Harbor Day, last December 7, station per sonnel pledged $38,811. In early spring an All-Officer drive was held which proved highly success ful. Sponsored by the Military De partment under the direction of Lieut. J. E. Wadsworth, USNR, and Ensign John C. Busby, Jr., USNR, assistant disbursing of ficer, the present drive is being held in connection with a move ment throughout the Navy to get Naval Personnel to purchase more War Bonds. “It is our hope that every platoon and battalion will be one hundred per cent in purchasing bonds,” Lieut. Wadsworth stated yesterday. “Results of the drive will be printed in the Cloud- BUSTER.” Cadets who are on watch Tues day will have an opportunity to purchase bonds at a later date. Buying War Bonds is not a contribution but an investment,” Lieut. Wadsworth pointed out. “The purchase of a bond is no sac rifice, but an investment which of fers the same advantages to men in service as to civilian buyers.” Plenty of hot tennis is in store for next week when the War Bond Tennis Tournament for Pre- Flight officers and enlisted men gets underway here. Deadline for entries in the tour nament has been extended to 1200 Monday, June 21. Pairings will be made Monday afternoon and the schedule of matches posted on the main bulletin boards in Alex ander Hall, Woollen gymnasium and Caldwell Hall. Regulations governing the tour nament will be posted along with the schedule. The competitors will be allowed to select their own time for play ing the matches, although the various rounds will have to be com pleted within a period specified. Tennis balls may be checked out at the Recreation Office, Room 112, Alexander Hall, or at the Athletic Equipment Office in Wool len gymnasium, and returned af ter the contest.
