Saturday, July 81, 1943 CLOUDBUSTER Page Three Naval Training Station Scores Another Victory Scoring three runs in the ninth inning Norfolk’s Naval Training Station won a typical Naval Training Station baseball game here last Sunday afternoon, 6 to 5, before 3,000 fans. It marked the second time in 10 days the Bluejackets have come from behind to defeat the Cloud- busters. Their last meeting in Raleigh found them scoring twice in the eighth and two more times in the ninth on Dom DiMaggio’s home run to win, 4 to 2. Cadet Joseph Coleman was the victim of some erratic fielding on the part of Ensign Ray Stoviak, right fielder, in the ninth. Jack Conway, pinch-hitting for Char ley Wagner, who received credit for his 12th triumph of the year, started the fireworks with a single over second. With the score tied at two all, the Cloudbusters took a three run lead in the sixth. Cadets Louis Gremp opened with a triple, and scored on Ensign E. Moriarty’s Texas Leaguer to right field. Then Lieut. Alexander Sabo, who had replaced Cusick behind the plate in the fifth, hit a home run to deep center. PRESENT LEADERS of the Sports Program are the Vindicators, and one of the chief reasons for their success can be attributed to the undefeated volleyball and tag football teams which are pictured above. In 14 starts the Vindicators have not dropped a contest in the Summer Sports Program. Pre vious to the Summer program, the gym-tumbling team won six consecutive victories just before volleyball took its place in the Sports Program. The first four of these six wins were under the coaching of Lt. James Wadsworth, and since that time Lt. (jg) Leland Silliman has been in charge. First row, left to right, shows Cadets R. S. With the bases loaded and two down in the eighth, Lt. (jg) John Hassett hit a long triple into right field to send three runs across. Ensign Harry Craft, first up in the first, hit a home run for the winners. Ensign E. Moriarty also connected for the circuit. Cadet James Doole, of Dart mouth, started on the mound for the Cloudbusters but was forced to retire in favor of Cadet John Sain when the Weavers scored three in the seventh. Finals Scheduled For Friday Night Sixteen boxers from an original field of 188 will square off in eight fast bouts next Friday night at ] 930 on Emerson Field when the finals of the Regimental Boxing Tournament will be held. Through yesterday’s matches the field was narrowed down to 128 participants, and after Mon day only 64 boxers will be around to take part in the semi-finals which get underway Tuesday afternoon. While the field this time is not as fast as some of the other Regi mental Tournaments, Lt. Alfred Wolff, head boxing coach, stated that the cadets were showing an unusual amount of interest in the fights. Cadets are fighting at 135, 140, 145, 151, 158, 165, 175, and in the heavyweight class. Cadets W. Moriarta, E. B. Fortini, and A. G. Kleiber, all of the Mustangs, look best in the heavyweight division, while there have been no stand outs thus far in the other weights.
