Lexington Defeats Essex, 9-8; Still Unbeaten for Year The Lexington officers’ team turned back one of the principal contenders for its softball crown last Wednesday when it defeated the Essex by the close score of 9 to 8. It was the second win for the Lexington in the second half of the season and ran the team’s win record for the entire season to nine straight. In other games of the day, the Enterprise pushed over four runs in the eighth inning of an over time tilt to sink the Ranger, 6-2. The Satellites walloped Saratoga, 10-1, and Cowpens outslugged the Hospital Corps, 14-10. Games scheduled for next Wed nesday are: Lexington vs. Enter prise; Ranger vs. Hospital Corps; Saratoga vs. Essex; Satellites vs. RUSSIAN FRONT (Continued from page one) armored divisions in the Wehr- macht on the Russian front. The backbone of these Panzer units is now the sixty-ton Mark VI “Tiger” tank which carries an 88 mm. gun in its central turret. These forces are formidable and their weight and strength are still ominous though the German High Command is now committed to a defensive strategy. It is true that on July 5 the Germans lunged for ward in the Kursk salient in what at first appeared to be an advance on Voronezh. Their thrust is noW believed to have been timed mere ly to upset an anticipated Rus sian offensive, which is now menac ing Orel, key munitions manufac turing town and railroad center some 200 miles due south of Mos cow.
