All-Stars Lose to Cloudbusters;
Erwin Auditorium Scores Upset
A surprise 7 to 5 defeat by the
Erwin auditorium nine from Dur
ham, and a 7 to 4 victory over the
Carolina Victory League All-Stars
marked the play of the Cloud
busters last week end.
Just back from New York where
they had defeated a combined New
York Yankee-Cleveland Indian
team, 11 to 5, the Cloudbusters
were as much surprised as anyone
when they dropped the contest to
Erwin on Saturday afternoon.
A triple by Cadet Ted Williams,
a homer and double by Lt. John
Hassett and a single by Allen
Cooke, PhM3c, had produced five
Pre-Flight tallies in the first and
third innings. After that, though,
Mitchell, hurling for the winners,
kept Cloudbuster hits well scat
tered, and in the ninth frame re-

Same Old Story—
Lexington Wins, 6-5
It was the same old story again
last Wednesday as the Lexington
defeated the Enterprise, 6-5, to
continue its mastery over the rest
of the softball teams in the Pre-
Flight league. It was the third
straight win for the Lexington
in the current schedule and tenth
consecutive win of the year with
out a defeat.
The Essex turned back Sara
toga, 6-2, the Ranger beat the Hos
pital Corps, 8-6, and Cowpens
coasted to a 7-2 triumph over the
Satellites to tighten the battle for
second place with four teams now
tied for that spot.
Regimental Boxing Champions
Had Tough Fights All The way
Boxing has held the spotlight during the past 10 days in the Sports
Program as 188 cadets, trained to a fine trim, took part in over 150
bouts.
Finals of the tournament, deciding the Regimental Champions,
were scheduled to be held last night on Emerson Field, but the re
sults were not available for today’s Cloudbuster as the fights were
held after the deadline for news,
Sixteen cadets—the cream of
the crop—reached the final round
in eight different weights. Oddly
enough, the Vindicators, leaders
m the Sports Program standings,
failed to place a man in the finals,
while the Mariners and Coronados,
in sixth and tenth place respec
tively, paced the field with four
men each.
The Mustangs, in last place in
the Sports Program, had two men
in the finals, and the Buffalos,
Wildcats, Helldivers, Buccaneers,
i^nd Catalinas one each.
Both the Coronados and Marin
ers were certain of one Regi
mental Champion, and the town
of Richmond, Va. could lay claim
to another. In the 140-pound class
Cadets J. Sullivan and K. C. Payne
are both Mariners while Cadets E.
A. Garber and A. P. Carstensen,
both of the Coronados, are fight
ing at 165.
Cadets G. K. Roper and W. B.
Starritt, fighting at 151, are from
Richmond, Va.
Lieut. Alfred B. Wolff, a grad
uate of Pennsylvania State Col
lege and head coach of boxing at
Cornell University before being
commissioned in the Navy, has
been in charge of the tournament.
He is head boxing coach here.
For the most part, results of
the tournament, have run true to
form, and the superb physical con
dition of the contestants resulted

Camp Mackall,
Durham Bulls
Face Pre-Flighters
Camp Mackall this afternoon
and the Durham Bulls from Dur
ham on Monday. That’s the sched
ule facing the Cloudbusters over
the week end. Both games are
scheduled for here and will start
at 1600.
Lieut. George D. Kepler, head
baseball coach, named Cadets John
Sain and Joseph Coleman as his
pitching choices. Both are finish
ing up their Pre-Flight Training,
and during their 11-weeks stay
here have handled most of the
pitching duties for the Cloudbust
ers. Coleman has won nine and
lost two, while Sain’s record is
seven wins against three defeats.
It was Sain who pitched the Cloud
busters to an 11 to 5 victory in
New York last week.
The usual Cloudbuster nine will
start. Lieut. Alexander Sabo will
be behind the plate, Lt. John Has
sett on first. Ensign Ed. Moriarty
on second. Cadets Louis Gremp
and John Peslcy on third and short
respectively. Cadet Theodore Wil
liams will be in left. Ensign Harry
Craft in center, and PhMSc Allen
Cooke in right.
The Monday game will mark the
final appearance here of Cadets
Williams, Pesky, Gremp, Sain and
Coleman.
Vindicators Lose
First Volleyball
Game in 16 Starts
Still holding a 10-point lead in
the Sports Program standings are
the Vindicators with 69 points.
Following, in order, are the Wild
cats, 59, Buccaneers, 58 V2, and the
Kingfishers, 57.
While the Vindicators continued
to lead in total points their un
defeated record in volley ball was
ruined when the Mustangs de
feated them on last Thursday, 3
to 1. Their record in this sport
now stands at 16 wins, one de
feat.
Although the league leaders are
ahead by a comfortable margin
an unusually large amount of in
terest is being shown in the in
dividual sports.
Undefeated teams are the Hell
divers in track, the Vindicators in
wrestling, and the Devastators in
boxing.
Other standings place the Sky
rockets at 52, the Mariners, 48,
Catalinas, 47, Devastators, 46,
Helldivers, 45, Coronados, 36, Buf
falos, 35^, and the Mustangs also
at 35V2.
All winners in last night’s box
ing tournament, the runners-up
and members of the winning team
will get the special Liberty Award
tonight.
