Shanahan, USNR Academic Department The battles that are now open ing for Smolensk and Kiev are the first serious test of strength between the defensive might of the Wehrmacht and the offensive drive of the Red Army. Although the German with drawal from Orel, Bryansk, Khar kov, and other fortified places oc curred under pressure, none of these cities lay along what Ger man military spokesmen refer to as their “line of natural defenses.” This phrase may be only an il lusion created for home-consump- tion in Germany, yet the rivers of western Russia, particularly the Dnieper, the Dvina, and the Nie- men, certainly afford some foot hold for a stubborn army. There is in addition another natural bar rier, the great marshes of the Pripet along the old Polish-Rus- sian frontier. Until the hard win ter freeze sets in, this marshy region, extending over a thousand square miles, can be relied upon to stop mechanized forces. Game To Be Played At Naval Academy This afternoon at 1430 at An napolis, Maryland the 1943 edi tion of the U. S. Navy Pre-Flight Cloudbusters will open their sea son when an all-cadet eleven takes to the field against the U. S. Naval Academy. The Cloudbusters will be the decided underdogs, but after five weeks of drills Lieut. Frank Kim brough, USNR, head football coach, had nothing but praise for his men. “We certainly do not have a world beater,” stated Coach Kim brough just before the busses pull ed out yesterday morning for An napolis. “However, I am really proud to be coaching this group of men. Their attitude and spirit has certainly made up for their lack of football experience.” Coach Kimbrough has had a tough job on his hands getting the Cloudbusters ready for the season opener. Only three of the cadets in the starting lineup have had any college experience. Reports from Annapolis rate the Naval Academy eleven one of the better teams in the country this year. A letter from Midshipman R. B. Baldwin, sports editor of the An napolis Log, had this to say about the Cloudbusters’ opponent for Saturday; “We have a fast light bunch this year with a lot of good material but little experience. Thirteen let ter winners are back, most im portant of which are Captain A1 Channell, end, Ben Martin, wing- back, Hilly Hume, three or four back, and little Meatball Ham- berg, our top triple-threat man. “Bob Crawley will give Ham- berg a run for his varsity spot this year, and Joe Sullivan will put the drive in our backfield.
