Fire Prevention Week
To Be Observed
Starting Tomorrow
In an effort to make the coun
try more conscious of the need for
fire prevention and control, Presi
dent Roosevelt has designated the
week of Oct. 3-9 as Fire Preven
tion Week.
In proclaiming Oct. 3-9 as Fire
Prevention Week, the President
asserted that the war program is
menaced by an alarming increase
in preventable fire losses which in
this country since Pearl Harbor
have been comparable to the dam
age caused by enemy bombs in
England in the first two years of
war. These losses, he stated, were
as real as if wrought by enemy
bombers and saboteurs.
Preventable fires, he said, are
being measured in thousands of
workers killed and disabled, vast
destruction of critical war ma
terials, food and other vital sup
plies for our armed forces and
civilian population, the ruin of
war plants, factories, homes and
machinery, in many cases for the
duration of the war.

Tar Heels play Penn State here.

games at Gate No. 5, and the only
means of identification required

Blue Devils Have
One of Strongest
Teams in Nation
Duke vs Pre-Flight Cloudbust
ers. The University of North
Carolina vs Penn State. That’s
the football schedule for this sec
tion this afternoon.
While most of the interest at the
station is centered around the
Duke- Cloudbuster encounter,
transportation facilities make it
impossible for many cadets and
officers to attend that game. All
cadets are invited to attend the
game here, and will be admitted
free as guests of the University.
In Duke the Cloudbusters face
one of the finest teams in the na
tion. In their two opening games
they averagd almost a point a
minute defeating Camp Lejeune,
40 to 0, two weeks ago, and defeat
ing the University of Richmond,
61 to 0, last Saturday.
At every position they are “four-
deep,” and sports writers and
coaches who have seen the Blue
Devils in action are predicting an
undefeated season.
While the Cloudbusters were de
feated at the Naval Academy, 31
to 0, they made a good showing
