Fire Prevention Week To Be Observed Starting Tomorrow In an effort to make the coun try more conscious of the need for fire prevention and control, Presi dent Roosevelt has designated the week of Oct. 3-9 as Fire Preven tion Week. In proclaiming Oct. 3-9 as Fire Prevention Week, the President asserted that the war program is menaced by an alarming increase in preventable fire losses which in this country since Pearl Harbor have been comparable to the dam age caused by enemy bombs in England in the first two years of war. These losses, he stated, were as real as if wrought by enemy bombers and saboteurs. Preventable fires, he said, are being measured in thousands of workers killed and disabled, vast destruction of critical war ma terials, food and other vital sup plies for our armed forces and civilian population, the ruin of war plants, factories, homes and machinery, in many cases for the duration of the war. Fires are bringing costly de lays in the production and trans- See Fire PREVENTION, page U Cross Country Team In Four-Way Meet At Durham Today The Pre-Flight cross country team, fresh from a 23 to 32 victory over the Naval Academy, will par ticipate in a four-team cross coun try run this afternoon at Durham. Other teams participating include Carolina, Virginia, and Duke. The five-mile run will start in the Duke stadium at the half-time See CROSS COUNTRY, page U Cadets Admitted Free to Game Here Pre-Flight cadets will be ad mitted free, as guests of the Uni versity, to all Carolina football games scheduled for Kenan Sta dium. This afternoon at 1500 the Tar Heels play Penn State here. Cadets will be admitted to all games at Gate No. 5, and the only means of identification required will be the regular uniform of the day. Gate No. 5 is located on the South side near the West end. Blue Devils Have One of Strongest Teams in Nation Duke vs Pre-Flight Cloudbust ers. The University of North Carolina vs Penn State. That’s the football schedule for this sec tion this afternoon. While most of the interest at the station is centered around the Duke- Cloudbuster encounter, transportation facilities make it impossible for many cadets and officers to attend that game. All cadets are invited to attend the game here, and will be admitted free as guests of the University. In Duke the Cloudbusters face one of the finest teams in the na tion. In their two opening games they averagd almost a point a minute defeating Camp Lejeune, 40 to 0, two weeks ago, and defeat ing the University of Richmond, 61 to 0, last Saturday. At every position they are “four- deep,” and sports writers and coaches who have seen the Blue Devils in action are predicting an undefeated season.
