A veteran of 20 years in the Marine Corps and four in the Army, First Sergeant Wladis- law A. Dezak, USMC, who at present is at tached to the Marine aviation detachment at this Pre-Flight School, was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and shortly thereafter saw action at Midway and New Hebrides. Holder of the Purple Heart, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, Pacific Defense Medal, Oak Leaf Cluster, Nicaraguan Second Cam paign Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, First Sergeant Dezak’s record of ser vice reads more like a movie story than some thing that has actually happened. “Those first few days of the present war were exciting ones,” says the Marine veteran. “We shipped out as a task force for Wake Island, but before we arrived we were noti fied that Wake had already been taken. “We spent Christmas day at sea and landed at Midway on December 27. We set up our de fenses and were on the alert 24 hours a day.” After a month at Midway, Dezak’s group was ordered back to Pearl Harbor, but as he puts it, “we were ordered to scram again on March 12, this time to New Hebrides.” De- <?>- FIRST SERGEANT Wladislaw A.
