Five Cadets Get Special Mention
<s>-
Three soccer players, a gym and
tumbling expert, and a swimmer
get the limelight in Sports Pro
gram competition for the past
week.
Two of the soccer players were
participants in the championship
soccer game played between the
Helldivers and Vindicators.. The
Helldivers won, 2 to 1, and Cadet J.
C. Hirst, 49-B-2, was the lad who
provided the scoring punch. Play
ing at center halfback, he sent the
tying goal in from a beautiful cor
ner kick, and produced the margin
of victory by scoring on a penalty
kick.
Cadet William C. Sieck, 47-J-l,
the Vindicator goal keeper, turned
in fine performance at his position.
In five games previously he had
only three goals scored against
him.
Hirst hails from Philadelphia.
He played four years of high school
soccer and three years of college
soccer, winning three varsity let
ters at the University of Pennsyl
vania.
“He is a ‘natural,’ when it comes
to kicking a soccer ball,” says Lt.
(jg) W. R. Strasbaugh, USNR,
coach of the Helldivers, “for he is
able to kick with either foot.”
Cadet Sieck is a Baltimore, Md.
product. He played a bit of soccer
in high school, and was an intra
mural star at Swarthmore College
for three years.
The third of the soccer aces is
Cadet E. W. Robinson of the Buf
falo team. Another goalie, he has
allowed but three goals in eight
games.
Besides playing soccer one year
at Penn., he also participated in
the sport for three years in his
home town high school of Olney,
New Jersey.
In the gym and tumbling de
partment Cadet E. G. Waters,
49-A-3, does just about everything
there is to do with perfection. Af
ter four years of gym in high
school he attended St, Lawrence
University. At the latter institu
tion, he participated in wrestling
and football but no gymnastics.
Here he is back with his favorite
sport, and he’s making a name for
himself.
Cadet Doran, 45-F-l, gets the
nod as the swimmer of the week.
However, the photographer missed
iiis picture for the former Prince
ton star is also a member of the
varsity baseball team. While in
college Doran was Eastern Inter-
Collegiate Champ.
Here he is known for his diving
exhibitions, and usually the cadets
arrive early just to watch him per
form.
