51st Battalion Wins Sports Program Crown
Officers To Study Survival Program
THE SURVIVAL PROGRAM, which has become one of the impor
tant phases of training at this Pre-Flight School, will be taught to
approximately 35 officers who will report here on July 15th for two
weeks of instruction. Pictured above is one of the many pictures that

War Bond Drive
Most Successf ul
Ever Held Here
Although figures are not com
plete, the Independence Day War
Bond Drive is certain to be the
most successful of any held at this
station since it was commissioned
over two years ago.
Over one hundred thousand dol
lars worth of bonds have been
bought at this writing, and many
more are expected to be pur
chased before the drive comes to
an official close.
The previous high for this ac
tivity was the $87,000 total which
was purchased in the Pearl Har
bor Drive shortly before Christ
mas.
Lieut. W. C. Clark, War Bond of
ficer, pointed out that the success
of the drive was due to the all-out
support from the cadets, officers,
WAVES, enlisted men and civilian
personnel who are attached to the
station.
Open House for 55th
Want to meet some Univer
sity coeds? Like refreshments?
This afternoon between 1600
and 1800 Mclver Hall is hold
ing open house for all cadets
of the 55th Battalion.
Dance for All
Tonight, between 2100 and
2400, the Order of the Grail,
University honor organization,
is sponsoring a dance in Wool
len Gymnasium. Music will be
furnished by Freddie Johnson
and his orchestra. Cadets are
invited to attend.
Reporting Aboard
Lieut. Paul W. Bryant, USNR,
reported aboard this week from
Quonset Point, R. I. He will serve
here in the Military Department.
Crew Picnic Today
At Country Club
All enlisted personnel are in
vited to attend the crew picnic to
be held at the Chapel Hill Country
Club today starting at 1730.
The evening meal will be sei*ved
at 1830, and the Pre-Flight band
will be on hand to furnish dance
music later.
54th Leads
In Academics
The 54th Battalion, with 94.00%
satisfactory, led battalion compe
tition in academics.
The 50th had 93.89%, the 53rd
92.33, the 51st 90.78, and the 52nd
85.46.
Approximately 35 officers from
throughout the United States will
be here starting July 15th to re
ceive special instruction in the
survival program which is now
being taught at the four Pre-
Flight schools.
Lieut. Comdr. Harold E. Lowe,
USNR, officer in charge of sur
vival training for the Navy, will
be here during the course of in
struction. Also, plans are now
underway to bring several au
thorities on outdoor life to Chapel
Hill to speak before the group.

Battalion
Competition
Won by 50th
Before 2,000 spectators, includ
ing Dr. Frank P. Graham, presi
dent of the University of North
Carolina, the 51st Battalion won
the Sports Program Champion
ships on Tuesday evening with an
overall total of 90 points.
However, the 50th Battalion,
with a 137 point total in mili
tary, academic and class athletics
and an additional 86 points in
sports program competition, had
the best mark in the entire bat
talion competition for the two
weeks just ending. Their total
was 223%.
The 53rd Battalion was in sec
ond place with 176%, the 51st had
175, the 54th 127%, and the 52nd
102%.
Final results of all competition
show that the 51st won out in
wrestling over the 53rd, 48 to 14;
the 52nd won boxing over the 50th,
9 to 8; the 50th won over the 53rd
in swimming, 44 to 40; the 52nd
defeated the 54th in soccer, 4 to 2,
and the 50th bested the 51st in
track, 46 to 41.
While the regular sports com
petition was of the highest cal
ibre, the drill exhibition by the
French Cadets and the special
tumbling and trampoline exhibi
tion added much to the highly en
tertaining program.
One platoon of French Ca
dets performed in the special
exhibition which included many
difficult maneuvers. They had
been drilled by 2nd Lieut. Wood
row Ramsey, USMCR, assistant
drill officer.
The tumbling and trampoline
exhibition, under the direction of
Lieut. Hewlett, received much
