Cummins Chaplain Corps, USNR '‘Not by might, nor by power, hut by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.’-—Zecharia'H 4:6; “I would give a good deal to be able to per suade some people that, you cannot take Chris tian ideas away from their Christian dynamic and source of power, impose them by legisla tion upon d^Christianized people, seek to make them work by use,of pagan machinery, and expect as a result the kingdom of God on earth amojjg men who lack good will. The ideas are sound, but Christ’s thoughts require Christ’s men filled with Christ’s spirit to work them out for Christ’s purposes. Nothing would so woefully fail as the attempt of a largely pagan state to impose through legis lation the ideas of the Sermon on the Mount upon a largely pagan society.. .. For only the power of God can change man’s nature; and unless man’s nature is changed, every new plan comes to grief on the rock of man’s in herent selfishness, and every new discovery is wrested to a destructive end.”—(Leslie D. Weatherhead in In Quest of a Kingdom^) How true are the above words. Man has been struggling to build a better world out of the wreck and ruins of war. His attempts have been many and his failures equal in num ber all because of his unwillingness to let God lay the foundation in the human heart. We cannot build upon the sinful, human, de praved nature of man because the kingdom of God is a spiritual kingdom and not ma terialistic. We must depend upon God and His power working in the hearts of men. On The Lighter Side The scene is a train compartment in Ro mania. The characters: a German officer, a Romanian officer, an old lady and an attrac tive girL ‘ '■ The train enters a tunnel. The passengers hear first a kiss, then a vigorous slap. The train emerges into the light again. Everyone remains silent but the German of ficer has a black eye. ' The old lady thinks: “What a good girl she is, such good manners, such a fine’moral char acter.” ' - The ^rl thinks :““Isn’t it odd that the'Ger man tried to kiss the old lady, and not me?” The German thinks: “That Romanian is a smart fellow, he steals " a kiss and I get punched.” The Romanian thinks: “I am a smart fel low. I kiss the back of my,hand, hit a German officer and get away with it.” ■ ^ ^ sjc ^ * s*e Cadet No. 1: “Get ready to die. I’m going to shoot you,” Cadet No. 2: “Why?” Cadet Nj5^» 1: “I always told myself I’d shoot anyone who looked like me.” Cadet No. 2: “Do I look like you?” Cadet No. 1: “Yes.” Cadet No. 2: “Then shoot me.” ' Officer to WAVES:. No, no. Miss Quacken- bush! When somebody approaches your sen try post you are to say “Halt! Who goes there?” , . . NotStop or I’ll scream!” * * * * I asked her if she was doing anything that evening and she said she wasn’t. So I took her out and sure enough she wasn’t. A traveling salesman was registering at. a small hotel and a bedbug crawled slowly across the page. “My gosh,” he exclaimed, “I’ve been bitten by all sorts of bugs in all sorts of hotels, but this is the first time I’ve seen a bug crawl down to see what room I’d be in.” Remember the good old days when stockings were within reach of all? silk Sunday Divine Services ' Protestant 1000 Memorial EaO Boman Catholic 0816 Gerrard Hall 1000 Hill Music Hall Jewish 1000 Graham Memorial' • • • Chaplain’s Office Hours: Daily, 0820>1700; Mond^ and Wednesday, 08S0*1800.
