shop, a soda fountain, a hospital
and a post office.

py Hour” at Memorial Hall on

Is Up 51 Per Cent
In Buying Power
With the 63rd battalion and
the Athletic Dept, unchallenged
as the champion bond-buyers of
the station, Pre-Flight at Chapel
Hill closed the third Pearl Har
bor extra cash War Loan drive
on a resoundingly triumphant
chord this week.
Final figures announced by
Lieut. Cmdr. W. C. Clark re
veal that a total of $87,450 was
invested by 1,552 cadets, officers,
enlisted and civilian personnel.
This total represents a 51% in
crease in the purchasing power
of each hand over 1943. Last
year station personnel totalling
2,325, or 773 more persons, in
vested $87,925.
When the sales ended the 63rd
battalion had bought $19,300
worth of grief for Tojo, for an
average of approximately $123.-
00 for each of the 157 cadets.
Runners-up among the cadets
were the AFTs, who bought $11,-
725. Next came a merry battle
for third between the 61st, with
$9,850, and the 62nd, with $9,-
825. The new 64th invested $8,-
125 and the 60th, $1,975.

the five-figure mark. The 72
members purchased $10,625
worth of bonds, or an average
of more than $147.00 apiece. In
second place was the Academic
Dept., with $6,375.

ministration, $3,975; Military,
$3,825, and Dispensary, $1,850.
Navy Urges Increased Use Of V-Mail
To ETO As Weather Cuts Down Flying
Because air mail service to
and from U. S. Naval personnel
in the European Theatre of Op
erations has recently become
less frequent, post office authori
ties at U. S. Naval headquarters
in England are urging increased
use of V-mail.
Air mail will continue to be
slow during the winter months,
since Naval flying over Northern
Atlantic routes has been cur
tailed until better flying weather
in the spring. During summer
months air mail letters to Europe
averaged less than a week in de
livery. More than two weeks
will be required during the win
ter.
V-mail, always a priority item
in trans-Atlantic flights, will con
tinue to reach its destination in
the normal time of 5 to 7 days.
The equivalent of 25 sacks of
air mail letters can be carried in
one small V-mail sack, recorded
on 16 mm. film. Because of the
quantity of air mail posted, much
of it will have to be carried in
ships during the winter.
