’Buster Grid Squad
Shows Good Team
Spirit In Workouts
CLOUDBUSTER COACHES—^The quintet of coaches who will guide the Cloudbusters through
their rugged nine-game schedule this year are, left to right: Lt. Frank C. Albert, one of the great
est backs in the country while at Stanford in 1941, who is handling the backfield; Lt. Ray R.
Bray, from Western Michigan and ex-Chicago Bear, who is in charge of the guards; Lt. Comdr.
Paul H. Bryant, former Alabama star, who is head coach; Lt. Carney G. Laslie, another Alabama
ace lineman, line coach, and Lt. John F. Druze, former Fordham grid star, end coach.
As the Cloudbuster squad
went to work this week to iron
out the usual early season flaws,
Lt. Comdr. Paul Bryant, head
coach, indicated he is well
pleased with the team spirit and
enthusiasm shown in the prac
tice sessions and in the scrim
mage held last Saturday. The

the interruptions last week by
the rainy weather and peace
celebration.

Tenn., whose good all around
play included several long runs;
J. B. Gregg, from Monroe, La.,
who scampered more than 90
yards for a touchdown; Harry
Bonk, 195-pound fullback from
Coram, N. Y., whose downfield
blocking attracted attention; Vic
Turyn, Holden, W. Va., who con
tributed good quarterbacking
and ball handling, and J. R. Del
Signore, McKeesport, Pa., whose
defensive play was outstanding.
Others who looked good in
the scrimmage were:
At the end positions, Francis
Evans, Springfield, Mass., F. J.

Crew-cial News
By Ann Onomus, Y3/c,

Whodunit? Who named the
column? Nobody knows except
the mysterious person who
wanted to remain incognito and
submitted his offering without
his signature. You liked it, so
from now, on it’s “Crew-cial
News.”
V-J Day, points, going home,
victory, discharges, confusing,
isn’t it? These words and many
more have been running through
our minds since that memorable
night of August 14, 1945. Who
can forget that night when we
met at the Cruise Club to cele
brate. Not a Sad Sack in the
crowd, happiness 4.0, laughter,
irrelevant songs such as “My
Wild Irish Rose” and “Bell Bot
tom Trousers,” and plenty of re
freshments on the house. Jack
Baumring, PhM2c, prophesied a
rosy future for himself as own
er of an Army-Navy store, and
John Hinkle, CBM, planned to
open a garden, not the flower
kind, in Yonkers.
Since that night, life has be
come solemn, almost gloomy as
the word “frozen” walked into
some people’s lives. Still the
WAVES go on dreaming of fur
coats, frilly blouses, nylons, and
cars. Barbara Earp, Y3/c, even
muttered something about the
advantages of a dependent hus
band, ten points, you know.

Another topic of the week—
Navy chow. To wake up in the
morning and see real hot cakes
and bacon before you, to stroll
over to lunch and dinner and
find meat, butter, hot rolls,
that’s the life.
