Page Four CLOUDBUSTER—SPORTS ■ — - — — -- — Friday, September 7, 1945 Cloudbuster Football Season Ends: Schedule Cancelled The Cloudbuster 1945 gridiron season came to an abrupt end before it started, when the Navy Department announced last Sat urday that varsity football was being abandoned at three of the four Navy Pre-Flight Schools, including the one here at Chapel Hill. Gridiron schedules also have been cancelled for the Georgia Skycrackers, at Athens, Ga., and the Iowa Seahawks, at Iowa City, la. Cancellation of these Pre- Flight schedules, it was ex plained, was due to the volun tary withdrawal of cadets from training and a probable reduc tion in the naval aviation pro gram. The fourth Pre-Flight team, St. Mary’s Airdevils, at Moraga, CaL, will be represented in var sity football this fall, since, it was said, aviation training is planned to be continued there at the present rate. The Cloudbusters, coached by Lt. Comdr. Paul Bryant, were rounding into shape rapidly and showing signs of becoming a potent eleven that would make it tough going for all of its op ponents. The original nine-game schedule included tilts with the U. S. Military Academy, the U. S. Naval Academy, Georgia Pre-Flight, the Cherry Point Marines, William and Mary, Camp Lejeune, Camp Peary, Wake Forest, and Jacksonville Naval Air Station. Georgia Pre- Flight and Camp Lejeune, how ever, had previously cancelled their schedules for the season. Coach Comments Commenting on cancellation of the schedule. Coach Bryant, expressed his appreciation for the splendid cooperation given him on every hand during the past weeks of work with the Cloudbusters. “The hard work and excellent team spirit of cadet and officer players alike during the tough and sometimes tedious pre-sea son drills, and the fine assis tance given by members of the coaching staff,” he said, “con vince me that the 1945 edition of the Cloudbusters would have been one to be proud of. “While cancellation of the schedule was regretted, there was no alternative.” Scrimmage Against Duke Last Saturday the Cloudbust ers demonstrated a bit of their offensive and defensive strength when they blanked the Duke University Blue Devils, 12-0, in a five-period informal practice game. While both teams were unable to score in the first two periods, the Cloudbusters did most of the ground gaining. At the start of the third pe riod, Pre-Flight took the ball on its own 40 and reeled off three straight first downs to the Duke 14 before losing the ball on a fumble. After the Blue Devils booted out, Jed Pepper, 160- pound halfback from Mississippi State College, reversed around his own left end for 50 yards and the first Cloudbuster touch down. A Pre-Flight pass play put the ball on Duke’s three-yard line at the end of the third period and two line bucks from that point gave Pre-Flight its second tally early in the fourth quarter. Jim McDonald, former Ohio State star, knifed over guard for the last six inches. A Duke tally in the fifth pe riod was nullified by a clipping penalty. Last workout of the season for the Cloudbusters will be a re turn scrimmage with Duke scheduled for tomorrow at Dur ham. tJluo ^ears A Military Pontifical Field Mass took place Sunday morn ing in Kenan Stadium. Mass was offered by His Excellency, the Most Reverend Eugene J. McGuinness, D.D., Bishop of Ra leigh, N. C. Without further current recruiting, the retention of these cadets who are now in Pre- Flight, Primary, or Intermediate training stages would cause a surplus of naval aviators in one general age group. Thus, in fu ture years, there would be a gap between aviation classes because no students would have been re cruited in the immediate post war period. day recalled many historic high lights in the development of the world’s mightiest naval air power.
