The Messenger, -PUBLISHED AT- SPKING HOPE, Korth Carolina. STATE KEW8. ,TA8. L. IIARRISfi, Editor. One'Dollab a Year, in Advance. Entered in, the postoffiee, according to act of Congress, as necoi^class matter. THUBSDAY, OCT. 19, 1899.^ WE NEED A FACTORY imtE. It is self evident to the most stu pid observer that Spring Hope is rapidly gaining ground in the line of progress. New buildings are going up all the time, both business and rosidene.es. As fast as completed, and frequently earlier than this, they are engaged. People at a distance are continually making enquiries about the town—as to certain lire.- of business, etc. These people wish to move here, but dwellings can not, il se^iijsTbe ceiistructed fast euough to supply the demand. Hence, all who own building lots and aie finan cially able should go to work and build one or more houses for rent. Now. while this move is on and the town has an upward start, let us not get lax about other and more important things. Let us all get together and bestir oueselves, to es tablish some kind of a manufactur ing industry in our midst. We know of nothing in this line that would"be more beneficial to the town, and at the same time give any more satisfactory results to the stock company than a knitting mill. ^ e think this would be just the thing for us, and we can easily have it, if ous leading citizens will only get in terested and put their shoulders to the wheel and pull solidly together A stock company could easily be organized aere amont' us for the es tablishing of such a plant. Raise all the stock that is possible at home, and begin the work, and then we caa get all the help we want from Northern capitalists, who are con stantly on the lookout for a place to invest their capital in Southern man ufactories. Now, a knitting mill capacitated i'or tUe employ%t->’ ' I*'*' hanus, for the most part boys and girls, would be one of thu very best enterprises imaginable for Spring Hope. It would give those now idle around home an opportunity of mak ing money and also bring more peo ple to the town to reside. The ma jority, yea, we might say the entire amount of the weekly pay roll wowfd fall right into the hand.s of tM> mer chants again; and thus they would derive great benefit f^oiri the in dustry, by ^ largely incrervsed trade; to say nothing of *iie*\ndirect bene fits they wou!i enjoy, by the profits (It tli inn vestment iff the enterprise. What say you? Lets have a knit ting mill in Spring Hope. Other small towns have them, and many of thero are erecting the second and third one; Let us not lag behind our neighbo^g towns. So, business men look to your future interest and Jet none steps be taken, and the movement be started at once. Winston is to have an other knit ting mill. The foundation already having been laid. There was quite a destructive fire in Hycle county last week. Six build- ngs were totally destroyed with no insurance. Louisburg Timet-. Charles, a 12- year-old-son of Daniel Carpenter, colored, of Harris township, acci dentally shot himself with a pistol, on Monday last. The ball passed through his body, aud he died on Monday night. Greenville Reflector-. Mr. Frank Carr came over to Greenville Sun day. When he loft home that morn ing his little 7-year-old boy was playing about the yard, well and hearty. When Mr. Carr reached home that evenig his little boy was dead. The little fellow had a chill during the day and died in about an hour after he was taken sick. A special from Greensboro on the, 12th said: The residence of Mr. Gouldin on Lindsav street, was ec-* tered last night by a burglar or bur glars and everything portable was taken. Mr. and Mrs. Gouldin were away from home when the affair oc curred, and when they returned they found the back door open and every thing in the house turned topsy tur- vey. On Oct. 12th a special from Dur ham said; The jury in the suit of L. J. Andrews, administrator of C. M. Andrews, vs. State University Railroad Company, have agreed on their verdict. The plaintiff was awarded $2,500 damages, for. th death of his son, which it was claim ed was caused by injuries received while on a train of the defendant. He sued for $50,000. Fayetteville Oiscrcer; Just beyond Mr. Dave Breece’s on the River Road, about half a mile from Clar endon bridge, is now situated the largest gypsy camp ever seen in this section. Their tents, about forty in number, cover two acres of ground They travel in gayly painted car riages, some with entire glass sides and have more than one ^undred horses and as many dogs and seem- iiigl^-'^-’^auy children. The men tracW»librses and the women sell laces and trinkets, Oates county Criminal court was in session last week and among oth er "ases disposeil of one negro was A COTTON mqut::i MOCCAHIN. ■ • Fisherman (fe Farmer. Mr. Brimley has w'ritten to Wel don making inquiries in regard to a two-headed snake said to have re- centlyjbeen found there by a man named Johnson aud now on exhibit at a store in the town. According to the reports that come here the rep tile is a little ground adder about 8 or 10 inches long, perfectly formed except that it possesses two distinct heads branching from his body. Both heads are perfectly formed and the snake seems to have entire use of both. The freak is preserved in alcohol. If there is such a snake it ought to be in the State Museum.
