The 26 high school seniors who this year re
ceived Firestone College Scholarships
brought the total to 118 who have won the
awards for higher education. The 1957 winners
represent 13 states from Massachusetts to Cali
fornia and from Minnesota to Louisiana.
Forrest L. Eaker, Gastonia area winner, is the
only North Carolinian to be awarded the educa
tional grant this year.
The Company College Scholarship program,
begun in 1953, operates to provide financial as
sistance to worthy sons and daughters of Fire
stone employees, and is given over a four-year
period, or the time required to earn a bac
calaureate degree or its equivalent.
Scholarships must be renewed each year and
the student’s remaining in school depends upon
maintenance of standards of scholastic attain
ment, conduct, and other requirements set by
the sponsoring Company.
Under the program, students receive full tui
tion, academic fees, textbooks and a contribu
tion toward living costs while in college. Awards
are made to high school seniors whose Firestone
employee-parents have at least a five-year serv
ice record. Grants are made on the basis of
scholastic attainment in high school, excellence
of character, and upon merits set forth in the
applicant’s written examination.
Awards are made according to proportionate
Firestone employment and winners in this and
previous years represent almost every state in
the nation. Fifteen winners are completing
their college work this year.
The Scholarship program is intended to help
and encourage the sons and daughters of Fire
stone employees to receive the background of
education which will make them outstanding
citizens of this country and of their communi
ties.
