DEPARTMENT NKWS TWISTING By: Richard Harrison Twisting is continuing to work on quality to reduce spools of bad work. Each operator has an objective to generate less than nine spools a day to meet our department objective of 700 spools per day. Everyone needs to strive to meet their personal obj ective. Through work by the process improvement team on the third shift, several employees have displayed very good artist skills. Twisting would like to adopt a department mascot. If you would like to submit an entry, please present you drawing to HAZEL HAYES, fifth floor, first shift. A committee will be selected by the art team to determine the winner. All entries should be in no later than April 15th. Work on the second floor East End is near completion. Tension rods are being installed to help our kinking problem. All rings have been installed. We are also installing creels for individual packages on the fifth floor for 210/1 production. The fifth floor group is doing well to improve quality. This area has generated only two short doffs since February 1st. There has been a 30% reduction in bad spools. Also we have begun to splice pieces on ply twisters resulting in reduced inventories. Keep up the good work! QUALITY ASSURANCE/TECHNICAL By: Dave Lewis February's "Quality Problem" was with the Noblesville 210/3 fabric, TT216. We received a complaint from Noblesville when they found a drop ply (2 ply in a cord that should have 3 plys) in our fabric. They rejected the whole roll. We don't twist this cord in our plant; we buy it from Dixie Yams here in Gastonia. We have started a procedure for more frequent inspection of the fabric and Dixie Yams is working on the problem from their end. All our own people in the industrial weaving area have worked hard on stopping the defect from getting out to Noblesville. Thanks, guys and gals! ! WEAVING By: Walter Dodd Weaving's Task Force to check on low Sulzer productivity has been busy and shared their findings with each shift individually. Functioning as a team will enable the Sulzer Team to run improved quality as well as higher productivity. Supervisors in the Sulzer area will provide the direction needed to accomplish these goals but certainly the will to succeed must come from the team members. Coounitment to TQC philosophies will guarantee success. The SCRAM team elected WANDA HALLBROOK, chairman and MARGARET WHITAKER as secretary. Other team members of SCRAM are BARBARA BYRD, JUSTINE JETER, DALE DOCKERY, RON GARMON, MACIE GARREN, and CHARLES CARRINGER. Higher PPI's and improved maintenance in splicing are their main objectives. Our trial Draper air jet loom arrived but the bugs have not been worked out to effectively manufacture tire cord fabric. Come by the West End and take a look at our new weaving machine. MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT By: Becky Lefler Special thanks to MICHAEL McGILL for his quick response to the oil leak on March 3rd. Also, thanks to SAM CALOUCHE, RONNIE PARKS, JOHNNY MERCER, DONALD MACKINS, and BENNY FALLS for their help in the containment and clean-up of the oil spill. TREATING By: Phil Huddleston Congratulations to the third shift Treating Unit for being our first "Shift of the Month". It is based on safety, attendance, pounds per manhour and waste. A banner will be displayed each month recognizing the winning shift. We are now training with employees from each shift in the Treating Unit on the new surface windup. We hope to have it put into use soon. Thanks to BILL LINDQUIST for taking time to train us in the operation of the surface windup. Efficiency for the month of February; No. 8 - 84.5% Goal - 87% No. 3 - 84.0% Goal - 87%
