We are hoping this full week of aviation activity v/ill give the people of New Bern, and eastern North Carolina, abetter understanding of the air service available to them. This month we would also I ike to introduce to you our entire staff here in New Bern. AVIATION WEEK "THE DESERT IN FLIGHT" The above title would appropriately de scribe the interior of the Champion Spark Plug DC-3 which recently left Winston - Salem after being completely redecorated inside and out. The colors of the desert-various shades of brown, tan and green were adopted as the motif for the new interior. In re-doing the interior, both sides of the fuselage were stripped to permit the in stallation of large windows, including four 37 inch picture windows, two on either side. Flooring was replaced with lightweight balsa sandwich panels, which was also used for interior bulkheads. Carpeting is brown speckled with tan and laid over an open cell latex foam pad . The brown is continued up the sides by a leather wainscot of window height extend ing along both walls. Lighter colored platform shelves and tables, made of grained Ireme wood from South Africa, are suspended under the windows. Draperies and extended overhead lining, of sand tones, lighten the color even more. The overall effect, from dark to light colors, plus the "floating" fixtures, give the interior the airborne look. The divan and lounge chairs are covered with sage green cloth upholstery while the five ful 1-swivel barrel chairs are topped wl th similarly colored leather. Other special touches include a Craftsman AM-FM radio and Bell Tape Recorder-Re- producer for cabin entertainment. An instrument panel Incorporating additional equipment and improved arrangement was installed, while new electronic equipment has been added to the original complement in a modernized and soundproofed venti lated radio rack. The exterior of the plane has been painted a gleaming white with a slash of red out- I ined in block, the Company's colors, along each side of the fuselage. The well known Champion "Bow-Tie" Insignia can be seen on either side. A new concept of ultra-modern executive aircraft will develop when the modification AI.COA's DC-3, which Is now under - going a complete "re-vamping" in |NT is completed. More on this In a future issue. -5-
