The above photo shows Captain H. K. Saunders, Mr. T. H. Davis, Mr. Howard Cart -
wright and Mr. Cecil Beasley, boarding a British Overseas Airways airliner in London
for their return trip to New York.
This was the last leg of the trip which took the foursome to the Handiey-Page Aircraft
Company in England and the Fokker Aircraft Company in Amsterdam for the purpose of
flying and gathering information on the performance and operational characteristics of
the "Herald" and the F-27.
Flight tests of the Fokker F-27 and the Handley Page Herald brought enthusiastic com -
ments from Mr. Davis.
Also seen during the visit to England was the Roily Royce manufacturing facility where
the turbo-prop "Dart" engine is being built. The care and precision with which this
and other products are being built, was one of the more notable aspectsof this inspectic
tour.
FUTURE ROLE OF ELECTRONICS
IN AIRLINE INDUSTRY
A recent meeting in New Orleans sponsored
by the Reservations Committee of the Air
Traffic Conference disclosed the far reach
ing possibilities of the application of
electronics to provide automation and data
processing in the airline industry.
Various papers were presented by airline
personnel which indicated that the day may
not be too far away when the magic of
electronics wil I permit instant and accurate
computationof complex reservations pro
cedures on an industry-wide basis.
Those at the conference were reminded that
present equipment wil I be outmoded within
five to eight years.
With significant improvemerits,the electro
nic apparatus is highly accurate and can be
used for the repetitive aspects of reserva
tions, inventory andticketing work. One
airl ine qt present is using an electronic bra
in and has recently expanded itssystem to
include another station (American Airl ines
Reservisor-New York and Buffalo). Plans
for making this a coast to coast network are
now i n progress.
R.A.McAvoy of Eastern Airlines spoke on
the vital role of communications facilities
in the transmission of data processed by
electronic machines.
Representatives from Piedmont Airlines in
cluded R.E .Turbiville, K.E .Ross and L.A.
