Northington Named
To Special Group
Vice President R. S. Northing
ton has been named to a four-
man aviation committee by
North Carolina Governor Terry
Sanford.
Mr. Northington will assist the
committee by helping to promote
an expanding air service in
North Carolina.
The group will act as a liaison
between communities and the
state and federal agencies on air
service matters.
Gov. Sanford said he appreci
ated “men of this caliber taking
time to assist the state and its
communities in developing our
air service.”

For the first time INT em
ployees have been awarded the
United Fund plaque for “out
standing citizenship” and their
participation in this year’s UF
campaign.
Contributions totaled 82 per
cent of the $6,696 goal. Piedmont
had been selected as one of the
companies in the INT area for
a “pilot campaign,” held before
the regular UF drive began.
Figures for 1960 had shown
over 161 Piedmont families
served by the United Fund agen
cies.
Other stations throughout the
system also received recognition
for their charitable efforts. In
Norfolk fixed base and airline
employees were awarded the
plaque for outstanding citizen
ship, as was Rocky Mount.
Lynchburg also reported out
standing participation with 100
per cent of the staff contribut
ing.
Awards Aflanfo^ Baltimore
A far-reaching and significant CAB action placed Piedmont
Airlmes on the threshold of a bright but challenging era in its
history.
Closely following the Examiner’s initial recommendations, the
Ciyil Aeronautics Board March 20 announced its long-awaited de-
cision in the Piedmont Area Local Service Investigation.
Piedmont was awarded an inland route between Baltimore
and Atlanta, a route between Atlanta and Charleston, W. Va., and
a coastal route between Washington and Atlanta.
Apphcation in the case was first made by Piedmont in Novem
ber, 1958. The Examiner’s recommendations were issued a year
ago and were in virtual agreement with the CAB’s present ruling.
Different Points
The Board’s decision differed from that of Examiner James
Keith on these points;
(a) Piedmont’s authority to serve Middlesboro-Harlan, Ky.
will not be renewed. ’
(b) Piedmont will not be authorized to serve Fredericksburg,
Va., Hazard, Ky., or Lumberton, Salisbury, or Wilson-Greenville’
N. C.
(c) Nashville will not be added to the system and Knoxville
will not be certified on one segment of the system.
Authority Renewed
Temporary authority to serve Lynchburg-Washington through
Charlottesville will be renewed indefinitely, as well as authority
to serve London-Corbin, on one segment, Charlottesville on an
other segment, and Danville on a third segment.
Piedrnont will provide the first air service to the points of
Jacksonvllle-Camp Lejeune and New River (Blacksburg-Radford-

once briefly served by Piedmont a number of years ago.
In commenting on its denial to grant Piedmont service into
Nashville, the Board said it was probable that if this were done
the carrier would divert considerable traffic from Southern Air
ways.
Strengthen System
The new segments will strengthen Piedmont’s system, said
the CAB, and correct an imbalance by the absence now of a strong
southern terminal. The Board said many considerations warranted
Piedmont service into Atlanta, including a contribution to the
national defense.
The CAB agreed with the Examiner that Charlotte should not
be included in the Baltimore-Atlanta segment as requested. Also
denied was Raleigh-Durham’s request to be included as an inter
mediate point in the new routes.
Sliip-Stop Service
The Board has authorized Piedmont to operate skip-stop serv
ices over the new segments after each point has been served with
two round trips a day.
The restrictions imposed will permit Piedmont to provide
the points with optimum service, result in increased flexibility
and equipment utilization, and establish the appropriate relation
ship between Piedmont and trunk carriers.
In a related decision the CAB granted American Airlines per
mission to suspend service at Roanoke, and gave National Airlines
permission to suspend service at Fayetteville, Wilmington, Sa
vannah, and New Bern.
The decision adds Florence and Myrtle Beach, S. C. to Pied
mont’s segment one, and authorizes Piedmont to provide year-
round service at Myrtle Beach. It terminates United Airlines’
service at Hickory and Rocky Mount and American service to
Bristol and Lynchburg on certain routes.

President T. H. Davis has been
elected the new Vice Chairman
of the Association of Local
Transport Airlines. He was
named to the office during
ALTA’s quarterly meeting in
Washington.
