VFR with Turby It might be well to point out that there is a good possibility of legal action against Jack Brandon by my wife, for, as she puts it, the “horrible character drawing” of me which appeared in the last issue of the PIEDMONITOR. I had the pleasure of attending the monthly station meeting at LEX last month. It was gratifying to see 100% attendance. This is an indication to me that they are interested in their jobs and their stations. The meeting was conducted by Chief Agent Reese Kenney. I will say one thing for Kentucky — their Highway Patrolmen are very nice people. When they give you a ticket for a traffic violation, they do it in such a way you enjoy it. Right, Casey?!! Spent'^^^Uafc. night at ii«*irfort— had a •nice visit \A-th Jim Fields and Ja«k Cluck. Jack is referred to by his most intimate friends as “the ole hen.” (Cluck—do you get it?) Made a visit to SOP — that paved runway looks mighty good. The airport is about the only land left that does not have a golf course on it. That’s a haven for all you golf lovers. They say the greatest enthusiast is the golfer, and I can be lieve it after the recent experience of Captain Schultz. He rushed up to the North Terminal loading area at DCA in his Volks- jjagen, got his golf bag out and rushed in to our ticket counter to check in (he was running late for the flight to SOP via LYH ORF SOP). He reached SOP okay. Next day, he received a mes sage from DCA saying that his car had been impounded. He sent a message back — “Why? They have no right.” DCA replied, “You left your car in a restricted loading zone, doors open and engine running.” So you see, when golf is on your mind, look out!! Sorry I missed ILM steak dinner, but had the flu. Understand they had a ball. “Dad” Ross and “Rapid” Robert Reed attended from INT. It’s encouraging to see business holding up for this time of year. It’s going to give a lot more stations an opportunity to in crease their boardings the first half of 1961 by 10% per departure. Ken Ross, Bob Reed, Bill Taylor and I attended the dinner for EWN personnel for their increase in boardings. This was a de lightful affair and we enjoyed meeting all the wives. We also had the pleasure of attending the dinner at FAY last Thursday. We were joined by Don Edmondson, DSM-CLT, who takes credit for a lot of the increase in FAY business, so he felt that he should have the same betiefits of eating a good steak. I guess that’s about all of the scuttlebutt for this time. MARCH Success Means Steak At Stations steak dinners have recently been the order of the day — or evening — at several stations across the system. The rich man’s menu is a re ward for having increased their boardings by ten per cent or more per departure the last half of 1961 over the last half of 1960. According to General Traffic Manager R. E. Turbiville, the following stations topped the ten per cent mark: Bluefield, Fayetteville, Greensboro, New Bern, Newport News, and Wil mington. Two stations — Cincinnati and Louisville — missed getting steak dinners by a few tenths of a point. Deepest sympathy is ex tended to TRI Agent Hugh Sluder and his family on the death of his wife Dorothy. Mrs. Sluder died March 3 at Johnson City, Tenn., after a year’s illness. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Sluder is survived by their children, Eddie, five, and Sylvia, seven. H. E. Sluder has been a Piedmont employee for 11 years, serving at Tri-Cities and Washington. A new contest is now under way matching the first half of 1962 over the first half of 1961. W. R. Allen, F.A., ROA 1 J. H. Easter, INT 1 J. H. Hicks, F.A., TYS 1 Fred Kozak, F/0, ROA 1 W. M. The December issue of THE PIEDMONITOR carried a re print of an article by Stanley Yankus entitled “Everybody Knows That/' Mr. Yankus now lives in Australia where he continues to write for American publi cations. On learning of his ar ticle reprint he wrote THE PIEDMONITOR a letter in which appeared these thought-provoking comments about happiness; “During the past two and a half years about 40 Ameri can tourists have stopped in for a visit with me. I receive numerous letters from Ameri cans who are interested in Australia. Just about every one asks me if I have found happiness in Australia. “My stock answer was: 'You can pursue happiness but you can't catch it.' Little by little I realized that I really didn't know what happiness depends (Continued on Page Five) APRIL (through April 15) R. G. Harr, F/0, TYS 1 R. A. Sandberg, ROA 1 W. R. Taylor, Sta. Chf.
