Best Donald Blackburn Jack Branan Larry Braun A1 Booth Brantley Brown James Connor Robert Dean Robert Evans Gene Johnson (Continued on Page Six) D. R. “Red” Willard, an avia tion veteran and a nationally- honored model airplane enthusi ast, has become Piedmont’s newest owner of the diamond- jeweled Twenty Year Pin. Willard joined the company in 1942 as a Mechanic’s Helper. After a year at INT he received his A and E license and trans ferred to Greensboro where he was in charge of maintenance. He later returned to Winston- Salem as Foreman of the Engine Shop, and since August, 1961, has served in the airline division as Power Plant Analyst. Red’s hobby of model airplane building has gained him national recognition. His flying scale model of a Capital Airlines Vis count has won top honors in every exhibition in which it’s been shown. Top Honors He has also walked away with world honors for his gasoline- powered, hand-controlled. Class B speed models, made from his own design. In June, 1961, he set a world’s record with a top speed of 154.33 miles an hour. He explained that before setting the June record, first place had always gone to Russian model builders. They are supported by their govern ment, and work at their “hobby” as a full-time job. Competitors from other countries use their own materials and spare time to build their models. Lost Record Willard lost the record to an other American the following September. The victor’s model beat. Red’s with a speed of 156 miles an hour. “I decided I was going to top that,” said Willard, “and set a President T. H. Davis presents D. R. Willard with the diamond Twenty Year Pin. record that would stand a while. “I worked all winter on a spe cial model powered with an Italian engine, making my own modifications on the engine and incorporating the best features from American models. On April 29 of this year I set a new world’s record of 166.47 miles an hour. Now I’m looking forward to the national contest in Chi cago, sponsored by the U. S. Navy, where I’ll compete to up hold my world championship.” Early Days Red recalled Piedmont’s “salad days” when the infant corpora tion was still struggling to stand alone. Describing that period he said, “With a war in progress things were a bit uncertain at the start. Quite frankly, I never dreamed that Piedmont would grow to its present size.” When asked, in view of his 20 years experience, if he had any predictions for Piedmont’s fu ture, he replied, “After looking back over the last 20 years and seeing what’s been accomplished during them, I have confidence that even bigger things will hap pen for Piedmont in the next 20 years!” Rachel Alley, INT-F 1 Sherley Brown, Chf.
