SEPTEMBER, 1962 THE PIEDMONITOR PAGE THREE PIEdMOHT PRESS NOTES ROCKY" MOUNT — Three new Agents have joined the RMT team. They are William Bone, Larry Cline, and Wendell Gabriel. They’ve been very busy there with much activity on the new routes — 209 passengers in June, 515 in July, and 578 in August. A new airport may be in the worlds but no decision has been made pending the outcome of a hearing slated by the FAA and CAB for an area airport to serve Eastern North CaroUna. Vacationers there include Henry Minnix and family in ROA, E. B. “Bo” Fields in TRI, and Manager Frank Slone and family in Binghamton, N. Y. Best get-well wishes are extended to Frank who had an operation September 11 and will be away from work for several weeks. HUNTINGTON — Mary Jo Rigney and Fred Sheets are new additions to the HTS crew, and Jim Traylor of EAL is working for the duration of the strike. Manager Walt Ryczek attended the farewell dinner in CVG for Tom CoAven and HTS sends greetings for Tom’s future success. Among recent holiday-takers are Jay Johnson, Don Turner to Miami, Bob Bosely to ROA, Bob Waugh, and Irene Blake to New England WINSTON-SALEM-F — “Since our last report we have made some good news which we’re happy to pass on to our readers,” writes Ray Bullard. “Mrs. Betsy Buford, who has been with East ern for the past 20 years, became a permanent Piedmont employee on August 16. Another EAL Agent, Art Auman, will also become a permanent employee September 16. EAL’s loss is by all means our gain. We take great pride in our passenger boardings for July and August. In July our boardings reached a nice figure of 3832, which doubled and re-doubled boardings of previous months. Dur ing August we surpassed this figure to the tune of 4128. We take this opportunity to give credit to our efficient reservations and space control office and to our sales staff who helped to sell every available seat. “We were fortunate during the rush to have some vacation time. Manager Jack Brandon spent time with his family in Provo, Utah, while Norris Smith, John Combs, and your reporter journ eyed to MBC to bask in the sun. We invite your suggestions and comments, particularly from those stations within our route of flights. You help us, we’ll try to help you, and together we’ll be helping each other.” self as they led him away in his new white jacket that laced up the back.” ATLANTA-O — There’re still a few at ATL trying to make the most of the last gasp of summer, says Tommy Young, by tak ing their vacations. John Cromer has returned from time off spent in CRW and Tommy is back from a visit to his parents’ home in Cocoa, Fla. The “old dad,” Bruce Parrish, is still madly dashing from one place to another, and the crew there is thinking about buying him a motorized wheelchair to help him out. In conclusion, Young writes, “This will be an invitation to anyone that will ac cept — come if you can, when you can. There is always something cooking here!” ASHEVILLE — Naomi McGuinn writes: “Asheville now has five new male Agents — John Queen, who came to us from the Merchants Association; Farm Johnson, formerly a lab technician; Bill Knight from INT; Howard Mease, who joined us from the V. A. Hospital (no, he wasn’t a patient — just worked there); and Bill Talbert—gosh knows where he came from. Eddie Gabriel, Dave Cameron, and Bill Talbert have rented a house and are now searching for a cook — experienced or otherwise. They really have that hungry look. Dean, our lucky Lufthansa contest winner, is planning his trip to Europe. Now that the summer traffic is slowing down, we had a record month of 3115 passengers. Our Manager is awaiting the day he can see the tdp of his desk. When Dave Cameron is working operations, all flights are IFR due to the cigar smoke. The only advantage we’ve found in it is no insects. How much longer we can live is the question.” RICHMOND — A great big “thank you” is sent from RIG via Marie Prillaman for the help extended by everyone during the hectic period spawned by the EAL strike. Three new Agents — Rick Turner, Tom Farmer, and Pete Grey — are now on hand to help run things. The vacation rundown includes: Jim Thompson to West Virginia; John Weidensaul to Pa, and N. Y.; Don Mac- Pherson to Florida; Bob Rose to New Orleans; Margie Gorman to St. Louis and Calif.; Marty Martinez to New Jersey; Addie IMae Lammy to Colorado; and Marie Prillaman to the Carolinas and Virginia Beach. SHENANDOAH — SHD maae the conversion from Daylight to Standard time with no apparent trouble, reports Roger Green law. He also notes their boarding percentage was the highest among the larger stations so that steak dinner can’t be far away. Doelph Pitcock and Buddy Robinson were vacationers for the past month. Visitors included Bud Halsey, Don Shanks, Northeast Sales Rep. Bob McElwain, and Pete Girter of Lufthansa. The biggest news of all now is the upcoming race between Manager Bob “Big Daddy” Lipscomb and his Flying Falcon, and new Agent Greenlaw and his Reeling Renault for the small car championship of the Shenandoah Valley. NORFOLK — “It has been some three months since any news has come from ORF,” writes Bob Wylie, “the reason being that everybody here has been busy enjoying summer activities like swimming, boating, etc. Karen Brown went to Virginia Beach, Linda and Paul Wyatt took off for that other coast and toured L. A., and Bob Wylie and family spent time in BAL and ILM. Buddy Fleear spent his time on his fishing boat running charters, and managed to land a “citation size” cobia weighing 52 pounds. Bill Halsey finished building his garage, Larry Redden is still waiting for Uncle Sam to send him off to reserve camp, and Grover Twiddy took the plunge and got himself hitched. Ed Dail customized his car and did a little scuba diving. “Our bowling team starts a new season this month and here’s hoping we have a little more success than last year. We’d like to welcome new Agent Dave Dodge to the fold and new Stewardesses Moses, Parry, Ward, Cobb and Tallavast. We wish them all a long and prosperous stay with Piedmont. NEWPORT NEWS — Things at PHF are looking better all the time, according to reporter Fred Smith. He writes: “New Agents are Henry Poole, Neal Dillon, and myself. Ted McCann, our Lead Agent from RIG, completes the new faces here. Despite the new help and mass confusion, we surpassed our quota for July and August. We also increased our passenger boardings over the last six months by 16.1 per cent. We are now awaiting the date for our steak dinner. Recent vacationers include our Station Man ager Doug Guin, and Ted McCann. Both have returned and things are normal again.” AUGUSTA — “Now listen my children, and have some fun/ while we tell you how a good station is run./ From the top eche Ion, that’s Smith (Uncle Dave)/ who never plays golf while need ing a shave,/ and Colonel Jack Cluck, on vacation today,/ teach ing his kids that he knows how to play./ To new “Papa Nudge’ (the Jim McNeills)/ who are trying out parenthood to see how it feels./ Cody Reynolds has a favorite fishing spot and won’t move it/ and he really is fishing — and has fish to prove it./ Chucl Miller, wife and kids are finding it fine,/ the climate, that is, above the Mason-Dixon Line./ Van Berckman and family (have 1 left out anyone?)/ are getting used to living in the land of the sun. “Neither rain, heat or hail or late flight sounds/ can stay our Agents from appointed rounds./ Bins that were loaded supposedly correct/ seem to have been tossed helter-skelter, by heck,/ and the reservation Agent who screamed in fright/ when he booked six seats on a discontinued flight./ But far be it from us to feather the props./ It’s full speed ahead . . . pull out the stops./ Amid all the hectic confusion we face,/ it’ll clear in Augusta, a darn good place . . . good place . . . good place ... he kept muttering to him CINCINNATI-F — “Everyone had an enjoyable evening Sep tember 6,” writes Elaine Sturr, “as we had our steak dinner for going over our quota. We combined this dinner with a going- away party for Tom Cowen, recently promoted. Guests included Mr. Turbiville, Mr. McGee, Mr. Blackmon; Station Managers Casey, Caldwell, Ryczek, and Cash; Capts. Parnell and Carter; First Of ficers Miner and Helsabeck; and Flight Attendant Dunn. A recent engagement at CVG is Agent Terry O’Connell to Carolyn Donald son. A papa-to-be is Agent Vern McCord. Bowling has begun in the Airport League and Captain Bob Steppe’s Piedmont keglers won their first three of the season.” GoHXyUxii 20 YEARS SERVICE Frank C. Nicholson, Admin. BALTIMORE — Gary Schuman reports: “A gala evening was enjoyed by everyone here last month at a “get acquainted” party hosted by Gary and Diane Schuman. In fact, everyone became so gala there was no one left to drive home! We had a pleasant sur prise September 2, when nearly 5,000 people walked through our Martin during open house at the airport while Skyshield II was in operation. We began to think that 424 was going to need a major overhaul instead of just her routine pre-flight. Boarding 5,000 passengers, however, still only allowed us to break our quota by 163 passengers. Our on-time operations are improving, jumping to nearly 80 per cent during the first ten days of September. A re cent guest at BAL was Bob Reed who is trying to get us bonded (Continued on Page Four) PROMOTIONS J. D. Jones, Res. F/0 to Reg. F/0 Darrell G. Bumgarner, Mech. Spec, to Sr. Mech. John L.
