Time To Reconsider
And Reconstruct
The annual report for 1966 has been out for several
weeks now. It was an outstanding year from most any point
of view.
The first quarter figures for 1967 will be mailed within
the next two weeks. Indications are that this report will not
be as favorable as we would all like it to be.
Net income is down. Exactly 52 per cent.
But there are substantial and understandable reasons
for the decrease. As employees, we have recently enjoyed
a general pay raise. There is interest on the debt for new
aircraft to be paid. Although nonrecurring, there has been an
enormous expense for new equipment and material for train
ing us to maintain and fly the new planes. And there has
been a change in the system of payments of federal subsidy.
First quarter earnings are down as are other indicators
of Piedmont’s service.
Certainly, the Company is growing and we’re all ex
periencing growing pains. Every month the Piedmonitor
carries an ever-lengthening list of new employees. No one
denies the difficulty of training a newcomer and explaining
Piedmont’s tradition of offering good service. There’s so little
time. But, like a student observes and absorbs his teacher’s
approacn, a new employee adopts the attitude of the “old
timers” with whom he works.
Improvement demands that traditional equipment must
be phased out. But Piedmont’s traditional service must con
stantly be maintained and increased to satisfy the stringent
requirements of growth and progress.
If Piedmont has ever had time for tolerance of a slipshod
operation, that day has long since passed.
Congrats

Leave Now - Pay Later
It’s easy to leave school. You probably have friends
who’ve done it. They may even have jobs now and boast more
money in their pockets than you. Perhaps they even have a
secondhand car and seem to have become independent.
Don’t be fooled! Your working friends probably live at
home and get a lot of fringe benefits they take for granted.
You know — free late evening snacks, free Cokes, free tooth
paste, reduced room and board and a hundred and one things
they would find expensive — if they didn’t live at home.
It’s also easy to escape boring subjects. No problems at
all to leave behind homework, exams, report cards and a lack
of spending money.
But before you toss your books aside, consider this:
Where will your first job lead? How long will it last? Is it a
dead-end? What happens if you lose it? Will you ever get
that job you’ve dreamed about? What type of work will your
present education bring?
Look at the facts. You’ve been told dozens of times that
school provides a chance for a fuller life, opens new avenues
of interest, broadens your knowledge and understanding, and
makes you a better person. If you’ve thought it out you know
this is all true, and important. However, there are many other
reasons, some of which you may not have realized before.
By dropping out of school you close the door to large
areas of employment. You could limit your earnings for life.
You shut yourself off from training opportunities. You could
find yourself in a dead-end. You could be headed for a lifetime
of insecurity, perhaps even unemployment.
It doesn’t take much intelligence to stop trying. As long
as you have parents or guardians who are willing to give
you a complete education you would be less than smart if
you didn’t take the advantage.
When you graduate, if this piece of information had any
thing at all to do with it, send us an invitation and we’ll be
proud to attend.
