Bean wins FAA mechanic's award
Climaxing the Federal Aviation Administra
tion’s annual program to honor outstanding
aviation mechanics and to recognize the vital
contributions they make to safety, FAA’s
1974 Regional Air Carrier Aviation Mechanic’s
Award was presented to Piedmont’s Leonard R.
Bean.
During an awards luncheon at the home
office Gordon Becker, chief of FAA’s southern
region flight standards division, presented the
engraved plaque to Bean. It marked the third
'time a Piedmont employee has received the
award. Earlier winners were Ernest Hurt in
1969 and Frank Barnes in 1973.
Bean was recognized for envisioning and
developing a design improvement to the YS-11
engine fuel drain box outlet. His suggested im
provement was accepted and implemented on all
of Piedmont’s YS-lls. Bean was also honored
with gifts from the Snap-On Tool Company and
the Champion Spark Plug Company, two of the

Update on traffic improvement and route developments
June was good. July was better. And August
was the best, traffic-wise, of any month thus
far this year.
During June Piedmont’s passenger load
factor was 55.12 per cent on boardings of
323,261. For July the load factor was 58.56 per
cent on boardings of 326,964. August figures
showed boardings of 340,832 with the load
factor reaching 56.16 per cent.
For the first eight months of this year rev
enue passenger miles were 692,010,189.
Passenger boardings through August totaled
2,361,919. The year-to-date load factor, through
August, was 48.55 per cent.
In the area of route development, Piedmont
and Eastern have agreed to a route exchange.
The agreement provides that Eastern’s non
stop authority between Chicago, Illinois and
Louisville, Kentucky will be transferred to
Piedmont. Piedmont’s non-stop authority be
tween Atlanta, Georgia and Columbia, South
Carolina will be transferred to Eastern.
The proposed agreement was filed with the
Civil Aeronautics Board on August 19. Both
carriers requested expedited treatment by the
C.A.B. The Board’s approval is required,

Profit improvement task force will develop new ideas

To assist senior management in developing
and implementing new ways of conducting Pied
mont’s business the Company has established a
profit improvement task force. The group of
non-off'icer personnel is working under the
guidance of an officer steering committee.
The task force represents a wide diversity
of backgrounds and includes the employees
pictured here. The officer steering committee
is composed of Chairman Will Blackmon, Vice
President-Ground Operations; Audree Long,
Controller; Bob Kadlec, Assistant Vice Presi
dent — Research; Don Shanks, Assistant Vice
President — Customer Services; and Sheri Fol-
ger. Assistant Vice President — Sales.
In announcing the formation of the task
force President Davis said “We are hopeful
that by working together as a group and in sub
groups these employees can provide us with
