6 Piedmont a cure for the common car Looking for some ways to save money? You only need to look as far as your car to come up with annual savings which can add up to hundreds of dollars. These savings can be yours by ridesharing, and your choices are numerous. “It only costs me about $9 a week for transportation to and from work," Homer Vaughn, Main tenance, INT, said. “If I drove my car, it would cost at least S30. Sure, sometimes it’s a little inconvenient. I start to work at 7:10 a.m., the others I ride with don't start until 7:20. So they get to work ten minutes early so I'll be on time and I stay until their shift is over. It's not a long wait and we all think we have a good deal." Vaughn lives in Pilot Mountain. Each day he and James Black- welder. Maintenance, drive to King where they leave their car at a shopping center and board Ron Roger Crook Homer Vaughn Becker's van. Maintenance em ployees Jim Coon, Roger Hamlin, L.W. Smith, and Bob Miles also board the van. For Roger Crook, Maintenance, INT, carpooling has no disadvan tages. "I live in Arcadia,” Crook said. “By carpooling with three other people who live near by, I can see a big savings. If someone needs to stop on the way home, we make a stop. We all work the same shift, cind riding together makes our 20- mile trip each way a lot more fun.” For Tony Johnson, Maintenance, INT, vanpooling is the only way to travel. “I drive one of the Clemmons' vans," Johnson said, “and when we have 10 to 12 people riding, it's a big savings. I pick up people at several points and drop them off at Piedmont's front door. Depending on the number of passengers I have, the cost runs around $30 a month.” Isabell Johnson, Pilot Training, INT, has never had a car or even a driver's license. She has ridden a city bus for 17 out of the 19 years she's worked for Piedmont. “The only inconvenience is that I have to arrange to go when the bus is going," Johnson said. “It's a 35- minute ride from my home in Waughtown which gives me time to write letters to my two sons— one's in college, the other in the service—and read books. And I've made a lot of friends with others who are daily riders.” Johnson pays S16 a month for her pass. “I don't know anyone who could operate a car for even a week for that," she said. These are Just a few examples of the many people at Piedmont who are ridesharing and enjoying it. Now, thanks to a new program being tested at Piedmont's head quarters by the City of Winston- Salem, more employees will be cut ting their travel costs to and from work. Employees are participating in a ridesharing program aimed at helping those who would like to carpool or vanpool find out v.'ho lives in their neighborhood. Those interested will also receive city bus schedules. In March interested employees filled out a special form which was processed into the city’s computer. This month each employee will re ceive a list of other employees who live in the vicinity of their home. Then it’s up to employees to set up their individual ridesharing program. Tony Johnson Ridesharing programs can be organized at any Piedmont loca tions. If there is sufficient interest, vanpooling programs can still be arranged.
