The Up-And-Coming Airline 7 Corrine Ogburn and WXII General Manager Kennie Corley people 8c places hClt Basler, Accounting, INT. has earned a certificate in manage ment accounting (CMA). He is the second person in the airline indus try to receive the certificate, awarded by the Institute of Man agement Accounting of the Na tional Association of Accountants. To quality for the certificate. Basler passed five examinations and met specific education and professional standards. He holds a BA. in eco nomics from Wake Forest Universi ty and a M.BA from the Babcock Graduate School. * * * Tom Morton, INT. has been named to the AFUNC Board of Di rectors. The 14-member board is made up of representatives from airlines and oversees the opera tions of ARINC Research Corpora tion and Aeronautical Radio, Inc. These corporations are owned and operated by U.S. airlines. Morton is senior vice president of finance and secretary at Piedmont. * * * Brenda Patton, Cargo, INT, was featured in the February issue of Aircargo Magazine in an article entitled, “Brenda Patton: Cargo Service Is Her Business.” A class of 16 flight attendants graduated March 24 and a class of 12 will complete training on April 24. bringing the total number of flight attendants to 723. * * * Twelve pilots completed Pied mont’s training program March 27. bringing the total number of pilots to 625. Piedmont Aviation was one of 40 aviation centers and 26 aero centers to receive the SAF Award at Beech Aircraft's sales confer ence recently. The award is pre sented to encourage the expansion and improvement of a facility’s maintenance and service capabili ties. Piedmont also received an Order Planning Program (OPP) Award for its successful participa tion in a marketing program, and a Product Leadership Award be cause of retail sales. Tom C. Fergu son, ORF, was honored as Million Dollar Sales Manager/General Manager, and Ron Enoch, INT, received a Million Dollar Parts and Equipment Marketing Sales Award. Corrine Ogburn, CRO-INT, re cently received the Jefferson Award sponsored by WXII Televi sion for her outstanding commun ity service in the Winston-Salem area. The award, founded by the American Institute for Public Serv ice. is given in approximately 70 major U.S. cities. Ogburn, who joined Piedmont in 1979, has been responsible for organizing many food and toy drives at CRO. Through her lead ership, CRO sponsored a troop of handicapped girl scouts, took gifts to residents of a local nursing home and a rehabilitation center during the Christmas holidays, and organized a travel club for Art Whittaker, ROA, has been named 1981 I3oss of the Year by the Roanoke Valley Charter Chap ter of the American Business Women's Association. Whittaker, former Roanoke County Republi can chairman, is vice president elect of the Rotary Club of Roa noke and former chairman of the Roanoke chapter of Quiet Bird- men, an association of pilots. * * * Don Shanks, Customer Rela tions, INT, has been elected vice chairman of the Passenger Com mittee of the Air Traffic Confer ence of the Air Transport Associa tion. The committee helps set industry-wide standards of pas senger service in areas ranging from automated ticketing to reser vation procedures and baggage processing. * * * James W. Strowd, pilot, INT, has been named executive vice presi dent of Mid-South Airlines, based in Pinehurst. ■k -k ie The Piedmont Ski Club held its first outing at Winter Park, CO, in December. A second outing is residents of a rest home. The North Carolina Association of Vol unteer Administrators has invited Ogburn to conduct workshops on "Corporate Involvement in the Community" at their annual con ference at Montreat Conference Center next month. Ogburn has also worked with handicapped children through the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and has been active in Little Theatre productions. In 1976, she received the Producer's Award as Outstanding Volunteer in Theatre. This spring, she will compete for the national award which includes a $1,000 cash award. planned for this month. Nelson Phillips, ILM, won the first-place medal in the women's race. Second and third places went to Sandy Moss, ORF, and Rachel Cox, ILM, respectively. In the men’s divisiorn, Dan Alman, ILM, took first place. Jose Morales, EWR, placed second, and Luke Hill, ATL, was third. Becky Welch, ROA, and Trish LaGarde. ILM, received the most Original Falls awards. Morales took the Best Costume Award, and Jack Nemeroff, ORF, won the Used Ski Lesson Award. ATL employee Scott Bailey re ceived the Booze Award, and Bob Pate. INT, who skiied more in the rocks than on the snow, won the Big Rock Award. Any station interested in hosting the 1982 tournament should bring in formation to this year’s outing. * * * INT golfers have organized two summer leagues, one which plays at Tanglewood and the other at Grandview. The season runs May 7-August 20. The Grcindview League still has openings for sub stitutes. Members in cluded Priscilla Stanfield. Judy Gatewood, Lee Barron. Mary Lee Southard, Brenda Miller, Carolyn Miller, Betsy Sheets, and Trish Gray. * * * More than 100 people from around the system participated in the Piedmont Bowling Tourna ment held March 21 in Charlotte. Mike Ward. INT, took first place in overall events in the men’s division and Milton Wright, husband of Co- lista Wright, CRO, won second. Louise Beeson, INT, was high in all events in the women’s division and Betty Reavis, wife of Richard Rea vis, INT, was second. Tournament directors were Roy Yates and Harold Wilson, both CLT Gwyn Huie. Diana Goolsby. Mike Ward, and Debbie Coker, all INT. won the first place team event. The team placing second included Aaron Davis and Joe Russ, both CLT, and Robert Tieke and Bill Yaden, both SDF. Third place team winners were Bob Beckham. C.W. Neal, W.R Sanderlin. all CLT, and Milton Wright. In the doubles event, Robert Tieke and Bill Yaden, SDF, won first: Dan Campbell, PHL, and Freda Higginbotham, CRO, second: and Milton and Colista Wright, third. Mike Ward also won the high game award for men and Miriam McCutcheon, INT, was high for women. The 1982 tournament will be held next March in Louisville. Mike Carman is the director.
