HIGHLANDS SCHOOL OPENING
The 1953-195^ session of the
Highlands School will begin on Tues
day, September 8. An opening exer
cise will be held in the school au
ditorium at 9s30 o'clock t6 which
the public is invited. The summer
residents who wish to remain at
Highlands through the colorful au
tumn season are invited to enroll
their children in school here dur
ing that time.
The Highlands School has a cur-*'-
riculum which makes it easy for a
pupil to transfer to out of state

FLOVJER SHOW
The Tenth /innual Flower Show was
received by the largest attendance
in the history of the shovr. People
had gathered before the Judges had
completed their work. The Flower
Show this year V7as of extremely
high quality.
The Tri-color for the most out
standing artistic arrangement was
awarded Mrs. Jam.es Dowling. The
Tri-color in the Horticulture divi
sion went to Mrs. Robert Reese who
exhibited in the large dahlia
class. The Sweepstakes award went

ROTARY SPEAKER
Walter T. Nau, of Hickory, N.C.,
and a former District Governor of
Rotary District #280, V7ill be the
guest speaker at Highlands Rotary
Club, August 25-
Last week the visiting Rotarians
outnumbered the local members by
more than three to one, total pre
sent being 67, the largest on re
cord for a regular meeting. All
meetings are held in the basement
of the Methodist church at 6s30 p.m.
PATROLMAN TRANSFERRED
Patrolman Bryson has been trans
ferred from Highlands to Haywood
County. He will be succeeded by
H. T. Ferguson, who will make his
headquarters in Franklin.
HOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE
On Sunday afternoon during the
strom, Mr. Jabe Talley*s home on
Shortoff was destroyed by fire,
caused by lightning. Most of the
household furnishings were saved.
