HIGHLANDS AND ITS CHURCHES BY Dr. H. Koepp-Baker One of the very satisfying features of life in Highlands is a special quality which its church-life provides. The soci ology and economics of the coifjmunity im pose church problems that are not charac teristic of strictly urbon nor of wholly rural areas. For a few months of each year a cosmopolit£>.n population worships here and pcTticipates in the activities and programs of the churches. For a larg- for church meetings and adult education, er part of the year a smaller group of (ConH. JP&g^ „llj people indigenous to this region, carry j on a full life here - for them this is, and has been, home. The churches are ex- | pected to provide programs for both of | these popiilations and the remarkable thing j about them is that they do so with signal > success. But it is not easy and produces j considerable stress which may go unnoticed | These demands are not exclusively finan cial. They require a flexibility and a resiliency which organizations and agencies rarely possess. The summer residents refer tenderly to the ”sweet little churches’* which they use, enjoy, and support generously. Yet to serve adequately the larger congrega tions they ceil not function in a "little” way - they must operate as big churches. The year-around residents look to these same churches to provide them also with a full support of their religious life - not of what is ”left over'* from the summer but services and activities that take their own life, needs, and outlook into account. One of the strengthening elements is the fine interdenominational cooperation which exists among the churches of High lands. Both suiriaer and winter finds joint activities among the churches broadening tolerances, widening outlooks, emd stimu lating energies of the Christian mission which, each church acting alone, would find difficult. The Inter-Faith Fellowship of the Pro testant Churches of Highlands serves as a cowraon link and provides an agency through which each church may effectively address itself to the larger community of interest and need.
