MERCHAI®ISE GATHERED FRm ALL OVER THE WORLD DIflnonDS-If RICHES-lILVERiUflRE URniTURE - f i -CRYsmyuflRE-iinEns BEAUTIFUL GIFTS GIVEN AWAY FREE AT EACH SALE HIGHLflnDS fiRT GRLLERY ESTflBLISHED 27 YEARS Id THE CflROLinfiS GARDEN TOURS SUCCESS Nearly 300 people enjoyed the Garden Tours last Rriday and Saturdayo Such a highly successful event was achieved only by the interest and cooperation of many people* Miss Helen Augur and Mrs* T\idor HsUl served as chairman and co-chairman* Iheir committee heads were well assisted not only by the membership, but by so many outside the official roster of the Garden Club, individual credits cannot be given® !ttie Methodist Church must be thanked for donating its central location for the start of the Tours, and the City Council for setting aside an adequate "no parking” area* All of those who provided cars, and the drivers who gave their time, were invaluable* The newspapers of Highlands have been generous in giving excellent publicity to the Tours* The Garden Club acknowledges a special debt to the owners of the eight houses and gardens shown, not only for the con siderable effort entailed in opening a home to the public, but also for the cor dial welcome extended to all visitors* To these, and to the many others who aided the Tours, the Garden Club is deeply grateful* Plans are already being made for the 1959 Tours* All proceeds netted each year are used for the Garden Club*s major in^ terest, the beautification of Highlands® That project, coupled with the wide-spread cooperation received, makes this annueil event a truly civic effort* AKi\UAL MUSICAL On Sunday evening, August 24, the nth annual musical will be given by the colored people of Highlands. It will be in the school auditorium at 8 o*clock* Ihe program this year will consist of Spirituals, Gospel songs, solos, recitations, and several Spanish hymns* No admission will be charged* An offering will be taken for the benefit of the Highlands Methodist Church and the Highlands Community Hospital* LIONS MEETING The Highlands Lions Club held its regular meeting last Thursday evening at Hotel Edwards* Club President, Gordon Talley presided at this meeting, and the Club members enjoyed a talk given by Mr* William Caye concerning the Hospital Elind Drive* The Lions Club was asked to help with this drive in anyway they could* Ihe next meeting will be held Aug ust 21 at Hotel Edwards at 7 P«M* All visiting Lions are invited to attend* INJURED IN ACCIDENT Mr* J* Lamb Perry of Columbia, S.C* suffered severe face lacerations and shock last Friday night about 8i30 when he lost control of the oar he was driving and it ran into a ditch. The accident happened about 15 miles south of Highlands (ConH on page 6)
