Plan to go by and see the new ”Wash- pot" and attend the Grand Opening on July 6, Forest Service News The contract to build a new Ranger residence was given this week to Alvin Crowe and Company. The construction, t^ich is due to begin within the next few weeks, will be 1,8 miles south of High lands on Highway U,S, 28, Presently, the main project of the Forest Service is work on the seed pro duction area near the Chatooga River, From an area covering approximately 10 acres, seeds from superior white pines are collected for planting next fall. The purpose of this project is to secure the best quality trees possible. Salvaging of timber from the burned 286 acres near Gashiers began this week by the Glouster Lumber Company, Much of the timber, not badly damaged by the fire, will be used for lumber. Ranger Peterson reported that there were approximately 1^ campers at the Van Hook camping area this past week-end. Starting next week-end. Ranger Peterson stated, there will be someone on duty at both Van Hook and Cliffside recreation area. The Forest Service crew is presently doing repair work on all the Forest Ser vice roads throughout the area. On Thursday, July 11, Dr. Robert B, Platt of Emory University, will give a lecture at the Museum of Natural History on IONIZING RADIATION AND MAN*S RENEWABLE RESOURCES, Plan to attend this one of a series of fine lectures to be given at the Museum throughout the summer.
