FESTIVAL
Last Thursday* s ^th Annual Square
Dance Festival, sponsored by the Highlands
Chamber of Commerce was attended by ap
proximately 500 people* Exhibitions were
seen by several of the areals leading
square dance teams who were competing for
$175 prize money, "Clogging" away with
first place were the Mountain City Clog-
gers, of Franklin, winning $100 of the
prize money. Second and third places for
$50 and $25 went to the T, C, Roberson
Square Dance Team, of Asheville, and the
Helen's Barn Cloggers, Highlands, Mrs,
Tom Potts, Mrs, Bill Holt, and Mr, Bob
Padgett, all of Highlands, were judges for
the exhibitions.
Folk music for the evening's festival

Charles L, Danvranken, and a sister, Mrs
Lucien S, Meigs, both of Orlando; and a
brother, Reese Danvranken, of Kalamazoo,
Michigan,
STREETS RESURFACED; NEW WATER
PLANT IN OPERATION
Only those who were not in town
during the past week would be unaware of
the street improvement project which has
taken place recently. Highlands has had

was provided by a trio from Sapphire Val
ley, N, C,, who call themselves "The Em
ployees", Door prizes amounting to ap
proximately $600 were given away during
intermission. Merchants of Highlands do
nated various gifts for this purpose.
The Highlands Chamber of Commerce
uses proceeds from the Festival, as well
as other C of C sponsored events, for the
promotion and advertising of the area
through brochures, highway signs, and
other advertising media.
ms. dONNA GARTER PASSES
Mrs, Donna Carter, of Orlando, Fla,,
died early Saturday morning in an Orlando
hospital, Mr, and Mrs, Carter, who had
been summer residents of Highlands for 8
a resurfacing job done on its business
section and Highway I06 within the city
limits, Sherman-Simpson Paving Company,
of Mount Airy, North Carolina, was con
tracted by the State to do this job.
The streets were resurfaced with hot
plant-mix asphalt and have a sand fin
ish.
The State, which maintains all the
major thoroughfares, is also resurfacing
the Walhalla, Flat Mountain and Buck
Creek roads.
Town Clerk Herbert James reported
that the Town* s new water system was put
into operation on August 9th, Construe
tion on this new water plant has been
carried on during the past year and the
largest item now to be completed is land
scaping.
