portant part of their singing dedicated to
the songs of their native Blue Ridge Mount
ains* Nelson Watts, Bill Horton and Zaok
Allen will be welcomed back enthusiastic
ally in this year*s SlMffiR HOOTENANNY.
Miss Ann Dodson is from Anderson,
South Carolina, but has spent many summers
in Highlands* Her collection of folk mus
ic from both America and abroad is extens
ive and represents four years study in the
field* Her portion of the program will
include: "Copper Kettle,” *^Sing in the
vSunshine,” "The Three Ravens" and "Sinner
Man."
Benny Bunch is a musical man of many
parts* He is an accomplished performer
on the guitar, organ, piano, bass, harmon
ica and mandolin* He will add to his col
lection of folk music with a year’s travel
and study in Europe beginning this winter.
He joins Alan Davis, Julie Wiles and Bruce
Mulligan later in the show as THE EMPIDY-
EES, the most promising new ensemble in
the area who perform weekly at Sapphire
Valley Inn* Bruce Mulligan is now a teach
er in Winston Salem, N* C,, and has per-
fomed widely as "the other half" of THE
SASSAFRASS SINGERS" with Benny Bunch,
Alan Davis is a sophomore at The Univer
sity of the South and Judy Wiles is a
student at Marshall University, both wide
ly known in their respective areas*
THE GLASSY MOUNTAIN BOYS operate
under the direction of Lewis Osteen who
will be remembered locally as one-time
manager of Helen* s Barn, He has had a
wide-range of experience with folk-sing-
ing groups during the past five years,
and plays bass for the group, Lance
Leroy is the fiddler of the group and is
one of the remaining few of the old-time
fiddlers, Vernon Rowland is a Blue-
Grass specialist and plays the mandolin,
Martin Beckman is the featured singer
and plays guitar, and A1 Osteen, who
placed second in the Old Time Fiddlers
Convention last year completes the or
ganization*
The entire company will be featured
in the community sing part of the pro
gram, playing and singing the old fam
iliar folk songs of the area as well as
the better known folk music of other
countries*
Clyde Bolt, Jr,, is the producer of
SUMMER HOOTENANNY 1965 and the engage
ment is limited to two performances only,
Friday and Saturday evenings, August
2?th-28th at 8:30 P. M* All seats are
reserved and tickets go on sale on Wed
nesday morning at 10 A,M* at the down
