BETSY CHAPMAN DIES Jfrs, Besty Potts Chapman, 50, of Florence, South Carolina, died there early Monday morning after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late Frank and Belle McKinney Potts of High lands, J&*s. Chapman was a graduate of Highlands High School and attended West ern Carolina College, Surviving are the husband, Jay F, Chapman; two daughters, I't's. Frank Smith of Wake Forest a^ i^s, William Blythe of Florence; two'brothers, Jack of Bre- vard and Steve Potts of Highlands; two sisters, I4*s. William Owens of Clinton, South Carolina and Ift*s. Orville Coward of Sylva, North Carolina; and four grand children. Services were held in St. Paul*s Methodist Church in Florence at five 0* clock Tuesday, EEFLEGTIOIifS AS A YOUTH — BETTY HOLT The age we are living in is one of invention and innovation. Incomes are higher and job opportunities better be cause today *s youth is more prepared ed ucationally to undertake these tasks. Work is not so strenuous, but man*s thinking pcwer determines his success in his career. Times are prosperous and the standard of living has doubled, I'Jhy, in these good days, is youth so troubled? Times and peoples are rap idly changing, and the span of the popu lation is whirled up in this transition. Here sits youth, not knowing which way to turn — not knowing whether to do what he thinks he should do, or whether to follow what he has always been taught is right. There are exceptions to every rule, and the policies regarding youth are no different, (CONTINUED ON PAGE 22) ANNUAL SQUARE DANCE FESTIVAL IS TONIGHT AT HIGHLANDS SCHOOL GYM Three states will be represented by dancing teams at Highlands* sixth annual square dance festival TONIGHT, The "Shindiggers'* from Lexington, Kentucky, and the ^Mountain City Clogfeers” from Mountain City, Georgia will con5)ete with North Carolina teams which include the T. C, Roberson Square Dance Team, Ashe ville; "Highlands Hill Hoppers” and the ”Helen*s Barn doggers,” Highlands; and Valley Springs Junior Square Dance Team, Hendersonville, All teams will be com peting for ^200 in prize money* Bob Padgett, festival chairman, stated that prizes will be awarded sepa rately for smooth dance teams and clog ging teams this year. Judging will be done by representatives of each team, using a point system to deteiTidne winners. Dance music will be provided by Floyd Lamb, Willard Crisp, and Gary VJil- son.
