THE GALAX NEl^S JULY 11, 1968 PAGE 7 ROTARY HEIRS ALLEN STILL The Highlands Rotary Club had its largest attendance of the smmer with 20 visiting Rotarians and 3 guests and a good attendance of local members pres ent. President Bill McCall was called to Asheville for a late afternoon baidc meet ing and was unable to be present at the meeting. Vice-President Fred Stewart presided. The club^s youngest member, Allen Still, who was inducted in club member- shop last week, gave the program, Allen is an Eagle Scout and attended the 19^7 National Scout Jeitboree held at Valley Forge. There were ^^,000 scouts and scout masters in attendance. A crowd of that magnitude living in a tent city in a small area naturally created problems of varying aspects. The problem of log- istics alone was trememdous. The scouts hauled all their water for cooking, drink ing, and bathing a distance of over two miles and it required 93 carloads of food per day to feed them. The Jamboree was unique in another respect. With ^5^000 youngsters in so small an area and so much activity, there were a few accidents, but not one fatal ity, a record for such an occasion. The government recognized the po tential danger where air travel is so heavy and had the Air Service provide multiple helicopter coverage over the area around the clock during the entire time in order to create an off-limits area to all aviation for the purpose of safety. It x^as estimated that if an air liner crashed in the area, the casualities could run from 1,000'to 10,000 so no chances whatsoever x-irere taken in that respect. Mr. Still has an excellent selection of color slides depicting the many acti vities of the Jamboree and he did an ex cellent job of narrating while showing them, which created an interesting pro gram. WOMEN STRIVE TO MAKE BAZAAR A SUCCESS I'lJhy do our Highlands women work so hard throughout the year making articles to be sold at the annual bazaar? One very good reason — they have pride in the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and are convinced that it is a very important asset to our community. Since 19^3 these dedicated women have given over $30,000.00 in equipment from Bazaar proceeds. Not only this, but they have given of their time in mending linens and making new supplies. Ih a ;^ar’s time hundreds of hours have been amassed by volunteer "Pink Ladies" and Candy-Stripers to aid and to cheer patients. This has been a rei'jarding experience for all. This year we are striving to add the following equipment (CONT.
