A severe storm struck Cullowhee,
N. C,, early Monday afternoon, slicing
a 200 yard-wide swath of destruction
through the east campus of Western
Carolina University,
High winds, hail, and rain dipped
into the small Jackson County town at
12.50 p.m., roared along an eastwardly
course for about a half mile across the
campus, and lifted almost as suddenly'
as they had come.
In their wake were damaged build
ings, scores of uprooted trees, and a
Weather Bureau storm warning for 13
western counties that remained in effect
until 6 p.m.
CulloT'jhee apparently was the hard
est hit, but the storm touched in Ruth
erford County later in the day. Hard
rains and thunderstorms occurred as
far east as Charlotte.
No serious injuries were reported.
Some observers described the Cul-
lowhee storm as a tornado. Several
university employees said a character
istic tornado funnel (CON’T ON P. 20)

Lisa (Samantha Jones) is acting as a
narcotics courier when she meets Sam Hen
drix (Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.) on a plane
from Montreal. \Jhen they arrive in Nei^T
York, she passes a doll containing smuggled
heroin to the innocent Sam as part of her
scheme to double-cross the sjmdicate’s
boss, Roat (Alan Arkin). Con-men Mike
Talman (Richard Crenna) and Carlino (Jack.
Weston) keep a rendezvous in a Greenwich
Village apartment they believe to be
Lisa’s. They are joined by Roat, who has
murdered Lisa. He blackmails* Mike and
Carlino into helping him dispose of the
body. They also join him in a plan to get
the doll from Sam Hendrix’s wife, Susy
(Audrey Hepburn). Since Susy is blind, a
neighbor’s child, Gloria, helps with the
chores and, in Sam’s absences, acts as
Susy’s eyes. Sam, a freelance photogra
pher, is lured axiray from the apartment on
a phoney job assignment, and the three
thugs try to get Susy to turn over the
doll to them.
The film plays Tuesday-Wednesday,
July 1-2. at the GALAX THEATRE.
