THE GALAX NEI-JS JULY 17, 1969 PAGI5 16 MAYNARD'S CANDLES OLD BOOKS GIFTS INTENSE EXGITEimT Nain St. Highlands Treasures From The Orient Around the world in a little less than 80 days--the months of February and lyiarch—went Ralph DeVille on the search for rare and lovely Oriental antiques for his Highlands shop, the unique Stone Lantern. First stop was in London, by invi tation, to see two of the world’s most outstanding private collections of Jap anese porcelain, the Jei^s and the Reitlinger. With this inspiration, Ralph cross ed to Amsterdam, inhere he discovered and purchased some rare late 17th cen tury Japanese export pieces. In the old Biblical cities of SLdon and Tyre in Lebanon, he added early Ro man and Greek sculpture and antique coins to his collection* Ralph’s biggest find was in Teheran^ Iran—a veritable cache of antique Per sian jewelery, with natural pearls, rubies, emeralds and rose cut diamonds set in gold. “Hiese exquisite pieces he brought back with him, now on display at The Stone Lantern, In antiquity, the jewelry ranges from 100 to 1000 years old—in beauty, it is ageless. A pair of earrings, for example—designed straight out of Ihe Rubiyat and large enough to be made into a pair of brooch es combine pearls, garnets, emeralds and enamel on 2U karat gold. The price? $900.00. "India was too teeming and seething to stay long," reported DeVille. He brought back one treasure from New Dehli —a $2800 bracelet of rubies, natural pearls, diamonds and enamel on 2U karat gold. This shipment is ex pected to arrive in Highlands toward the end of this month. In Taipei, Taiwan, he found an tique terra cotta statues — then to Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan, to add to The Stone Lantern’s already extensive col lection of l8th and 19th century Jap anese porcelains, believed to be the largest in the United States. Japan also yielded antique screens and chests, carved wooden statues-- and, of course, stone lanterna. Seoul, Korea, was the last stop. Here DeVille purchased bronze Buddhas, 13th century Korean celadon and 7th cen tury bronze mirrors.
