CARDS WIN FIRST ROUND IN LITTLE LEAGUE PLAY Baseball fans witnessed another Braves-Cards thriller last Thursday as the two teams fought it out for first round laurels. The Braves, who had held on to first place until they were de feated by the Cards earlier in the week, tried to recoup their loss and nearly succeeded. Neither team led by more than one run for the first five innings. By the end of the fifth, the Cards, who had kept ahead most of the way, retained their tenuous lead at 6~5, With a grim determination to put the game out of reach, however, the Cards bombarded for 6 runs in the top of the sixth. They then put their opponents down in order to end the game by a score of 12-5• Card pitchers were Ben Wax and Doyle McCall. Pitching for the Braves were Bud Wilson and Mike Wood. Michael Bryson, son of Mr, and Vts. Neville Bryson, has been chosen Player- of-the-Week for July 7-12. Mike is a member of the Phillies, He has played consistently well all season at several different positions including, shortstop, pitcher, and catcher (or wherever need ed) . He has been invaluable to a team which has had its share of troubles winning thus far. But most important Mike has set an example of good sports manship for his teammates to follow. Though usually the underdog, the team, led by Mike, has maintained its good spirit. Moreover this seems to be pay ing off. The Phillies are looking much sharper in the second round and are now looking forward to their makeup game Saturday with their big rival, the Pirates.
