Charles F. Ivins, U.S.A. (retired) of Flat I^'buntain and Home stead, Florida, tell of experiences in Panama in 1923 - 2h Tfhen he served in the h2ud Infantry at Camp Gaillard, Panama, of which I'/kJor Ci^ight D, Eisen hower was executive officer to the Brigade Commander, General Fox Conner. The first meeting T-^dth SLsenhower was at a bridge table at the Officers’ Club shortly after arrival in Panama. The then lieutenant Ivins held a suc cession of powerful hands the entire evening and not only soundly trounced the I'&jor, who fancied himself to be something of a bridge exper t but won high score for the whole party. Of particular interest was a dis cussion of possible means of defense of the Panama Canal from invasion by the Japanese. Apparently the professional military men were convinced that there would be a World War II and that Japan would be our enemy, despite the fact that at that time Congress was reducing the size of our armed forces and scrap ping ships and weapons. Next Tuesday District Governor Jesse Chapman of Asheville will make his official visit to the Highlands Club. Dr. Chapman has been a member of the Asheville Rotary Club since 19^6, served as President in 1961. In addi tion he is an active member of numerous medical societies, conducts an active practice in thoracic surgery, is on the staff of k Asheville hospitals and teaches a Sunday School class of High School seniors at the Baptist Church. C OF C MEETING There will be a very important meeting of the Chamber of Commerce i'bnday, July 28th, at 7s30 p.m. in the Town Conference Room above the Chamber of Commerce office.
