CAPTAIN
Captain Jabk Jussel;^bf
Pleasant, Soutm Carolina, is the only
man living who has sailed around Cape
Horn in a sailing ship* He was 92
years old in June of this year and
was an apprentice aboard the Norweg
ian ship "Norx'd.g" at 17 years of age*
This ship was especially built to
carry people around the Horn during
the Gold Rush* This was, of course,
before the Panama Canal was built.
Captain Jack is spending the sum
mer in Highlands at the summer home of
his daughter, Nancy, and his son-in-
law, Mayor David Lyle of Rock Hill,
South Carolina, Another daughter,
Isabel, and her husband, Ifr, and iyi*s.
Edward Robertson, also have a summer
home here and Mrs. Otto S-umner of
Highlands is his niece, so Captain
Jack is well-surrounded by those who
love him. He also has another daugh
ter, Priscilla, Mrs. Thomas Robertson,
of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, who
has just left Highlands after a visit
with him.
Captain Jack loves to be in
Highlands and never lets a member of
the family rest in the summer til
they have taken him "up the hill" to
Chestnut Burr Cottage where he can sit
out in the porch swing and enjoy the
cool freshness of the mountain air.
His daughter, Nancy sums it up thus,
”The Old Min of the Sea has become
the Old I'fen of the Mountains." "When
he is not on the front porch, he is
in his lawn chair down by the drive
way, smoking his pipe and watching the
cars whizzing along the Walhalla Road
instead of the ships of the world
sail by - he loves action, wherever
it isi
Of his first voyage, Uaptain
Jack says "Yes, the ship went to
Liverpool and to the Canada Dock in
England for a new mast| docked in
Cardiff for a load of coal bound for
Buenos Aires 5 took on a ballast of
rock and sand to make it draw 16 feet|
then around the Horn to Australia
where the "Norwig" took on a load of
wheat, and on to New Zealand for a
load of apples on top of the wheat |
then we crossed the ocean in 36 days
and docked at Saplo, Georgia."
"The Norwegian food on board was
delicious. Lots of potatoes and
cabbage to prevent scurTTy, a sweet
fish soup (Swisskasoupa) every PViday,
plum pudding and a portion of *kill-
me-quick* liquor every Friday."
This voyage was a great adven
ture for a boy of seventeen and was
the beginning of 60 years at sea for
Captain Jack Jussely.
