Tory, arrive this weelcend for a visit

Georgia, has been spending the past 3

Atlanta were recent guests at the home
of Mr. and l‘i:*s, Charles Minter,

THE MOCCASIN M\SSACRE or
THE GREilT MOONSHINE FEUD
Passing the gently rocking chairs
along the verandah of the gracious and
sedate Highlands Inn, one would never
suspect that it was once the garrison
of the town of Highlands while the men
of the town “shot it out” with the moon
shiners of Moccasin County, Georgia, who
were barricaded in a shed on the site of
the present Edwards Hotel opposite.
All this happened in the year 1883,
not too long after the town was founded.
Highlands Inn was The Smith House, owned
and operated by and I^s, J. Jay
Smith, early settlers of Highlands,
A formal Declaration of War had
been made on Highlands by ^foccasin Town^
ship in Rabun County, Georgia, which ad
joins Highlands township.
The reason for this Declaration-of
War was that two of the Georgia moon
shiners were locked up in the Smith -
House, One, Avery Henson, had been ar
rested in Maccasin for selling moonshine
in Highlands (a temperance area) and the
other had been caught while trying to
help Avery escape. This called for
fightin*,
After the Declaration of War and
on the day named, the Ifoccasin Army,
eighteen strong, marched on Highlands.
Knowing that this could happen, the
Highlands men had bundled up their women
and children in the Smith House for
