PunctuaUy at Christmas the
Of sentiment snows down, emlwsoms all
The sharjl and pointed shapes of venom, “hawU
The hllU and hides the shocking holes of this
Uneven world of want and we^^, cushions
With cosy wish like cotton-wool to ctoI
Arm’s length interstice* of caste and class.
And Into obese folds subtracts sight
All truculent acts, bleedmg the world white.
Punctually that glib pair. Peace and GoodwlU,
Emerges royally to teethe air.
Collect the bows, assimilate the smiles.
Of waiting men. It is a genial time,
Angels, like stalactites, descend from heaven,
Bishops distribute their own weight in words;
Congratulate the poor of Christlike lack;
And the member for the constituency
Feeds the Five thousand, and has plenty back.
Punctually, to-night. In old stone circles
Of set reunion, families stiffly sit
And listen: this is the pight and this the happy time
When the tin milk of human kindness is
Upheld and holed by radio-appeal:
Hushed are hurrying heels on hard roads;
And every parlour’s a pink pond of light
To the cold and traveling man going by
In the dark, without a bark of a bite.
But, punctually tomorrow you will see
All this silent and dissemblin# world
Of stilted sentiment suddenly melt
Into mush and watery welter of words
Beneath the warm and moving traffic of
Feet and actual fact. Over the stark plain
The silted mill-chimneys once again spread
Their sackcloth and ashes, a flowing mane
Of repentance for the false day that’s fled.

} I The car lay by the side of the road. A boy s head*
I bloody beyond recofrnition, stuck through the windshield.
•Another lay ci-umpied under the broken steerinfr wheel.
‘‘They must have been speeding and lost control of the
car," Bomeone said. “Couldn’t make the curve,” said an-
iother. “I think they were drinking. I smell whiskey.” The
'remarks continued, but it wa.s too late now.
The boy behind the steering wheej came to — scream
ing pitifully. Blood was running from his nose.
At la.<»t the ambulance came. The boy on the right,
still suffering from shock, walked to the ambulance. The
other? Who knows?
No, they weren’t AC College students. But they could
have been! — Jo Ann Moore.
